Legal Assistant - Immigration Law Office:

As a Legal Assistant, you will have the opportunity to provide high-quality representation and legal services to immigrants who are facing an unjust immigration system. This is a full-time position with a union bargaining unit and flexible scheduling options, allowing for a 35-hour work week.

ImmDef believes that no immigrant should have to face the immigration system alone, and our universal representation programs are a first step towards that goal. We work collaboratively within our team of managing and directing attorneys, staff attorneys, paralegals, administrative support staff, and case managers to provide client-centered, holistic representation.

As a Legal Assistant, you will collaborate with other staff, teams, departments, ImmDef attorneys, and external partner organizations to provide legal and logistical support. Your responsibilities will include reviewing and filing legal documents in immigration and state courts, answering phone calls from clients and community members, scheduling meetings, and assisting with new client representation. You will also collect client information, assist with document gathering, and maintain client files according to ImmDef protocols.

We are looking for candidates who have a high school degree or GED, with a Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience working at a nonprofit or public interest law firm is helpful, and the ability to work in a high-volume, busy law office is a plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish are required, as well as a passion for providing high-quality client services. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point is necessary, and a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute is preferred. Enthusiasm for working at a mission-driven organization and a passion for social justice for immigrants is a must, and DACA recipients are strongly encouraged to apply.

Spanish fluency is required for this position and will be tested at the time of the interview. We also require COVID-19 vaccinations or weekly testing for all staff members.
