The Legal Aid Society, the nation's oldest and largest social justice legal services organization, is seeking passionate and dedicated Staff Attorneys with felony trial experience to join their Criminal Defense Practice. This practice is the primary public defender in New York City and provides holistic, client-centered vertical representation to over 200,000 people facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges.

The ideal candidate for this position is an NYS admitted criminal defense attorney with a minimum of 3 years of demonstrated commitment to public defense, racial equity, and social justice. They should also have experience handling felony matters in NYS or other jurisdictions. The candidate should have a track record of strategically guiding casework, projects, and relationships, applying good judgment, and pushing through roadblocks to achieve their goals. They should also possess clear and effective oral and written advocacy skills and have a high level of organization to meet multiple competing deadlines.

As a Felony Criminal Defense Attorney, the candidate will provide zealous advocacy in all phases of a person's criminal legal matter, from arraignments through hearings and trials. They will also be responsible for conducting bail review hearings and writs of habeas corpus to secure the client's liberty post arraignments, coordinating with specialty units, and preparing cases for advocacy and litigation. Additionally, they will be expected to advise and enter appropriate pleas in consultation and consent of clients, file appropriate notices of appeal, and coordinate with appellate counsel.

The salary range for this position is $79,591 - $130,308, and the specific salary offer will be dependent on the candidate's qualifications. The Legal Aid Society offers a generous benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, disability and life insurance, and more. They are also a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness and other State and Federal loan forgiveness programs. New York residents may also be eligible for assistance with loan repayments, depending on years of practice.
