Internship Overview: Organization: New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (NJOPD) Job Title: Internship Paralegal Student Experience: College and graduate students Salary: Unpaid Location: Statewide, New Jersey Duration: Year-round Application Deadline: Rolling basis (June 15th-July 31st for Fall, October 15th-November 30th for Spring, December 15th-April 15th for Summer) NJOPD offers hands-on internship opportunities for college and graduate students to gain real-world experience in the legal field. Students will work with attorneys, investigators, and staff to provide the best possible legal representation for clients. The organization also offers excellent training and mentorship opportunities. Job Responsibilities: - Assisting with investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation, and advocacy - Locating and interviewing witnesses - Serving subpoenas - Researching and gathering information and documents - Conducting field investigations such as photographing crime scenes and examining evidence - Drafting reports - Attending court proceedings and training programs Internship Opportunities: - Investigator Intern: Assist with various tasks, including locating and interviewing witnesses, serving subpoenas, and conducting field investigations. - Graduate Student Intern: Work in specialized units such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy. - Paralegal Student Intern: Gain experience in the legal field as a paralegal. All applicants must complete an interview with the regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, as well as complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork and pass a screening process before being offered an internship with NJOPD. About NJOPD: NJOPD is dedicated to providing top-notch legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. The organization represents individuals charged with criminal offenses, parents whose children have been removed, children who have been removed, individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, those facing Megan's Law tier classification, and individuals seeking post-conviction relief. NJOPD also has specialized units for Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program, and Forensic Science.
