Internship Paralegal Student, (Summer) at NJOPD: Gain Real-World Experience in Providing Legal Representation NJOPD, or the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender, is seeking motivated and dedicated college and graduate students to join our team as intern paralegals. This hands-on internship offers valuable experience working alongside attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing top-notch legal representation to our clients. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to assist with investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy, as well as receive excellent training and mentorship opportunities. We offer internships year-round and statewide, with opportunities available for both college juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students. Internship Opportunities for College and Graduate Students At NJOPD, we believe in providing valuable and practical experience to our interns. That's why we offer a variety of internship opportunities for college juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students. Our investigator interns work closely with NJOPD investigators, attorneys, and staff, and assist with tasks such as locating and interviewing witnesses, serving subpoenas, researching and gathering information and documents, conducting field investigations, drafting reports, and attending court proceedings and training programs. We also offer specialized internship opportunities for graduate students in fields such as social work, in units such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy. Additionally, we offer internship opportunities specifically for paralegal students. How to Apply To apply for an internship at NJOPD, we ask that you submit a cover letter explaining why you are seeking an internship with us, your practice area(s) of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and your availability, including anticipated start/end date, number of hours, and schedule. Applications are considered on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st for Fall internships, between October 15th and November 30th for Spring internships, and between December 15th and April 15th for Summer internships. In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must also go through an interview process with our regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD. About NJOPD NJOPD is dedicated to providing top-notch legal representation to individuals in need. Our attorneys represent indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels, defending those charged with criminal offenses, representing individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, advocating for children who have been removed, representing individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, defending those facing Megan's Law tier classification, and assisting individuals seeking post-conviction relief. Our attorneys also work in specialized units such as Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program, and our Forensic Science Unit. Salary Information As an intern paralegal at NJOPD, you will not receive monetary compensation. However, the experience and training you will gain during your internship will be invaluable and will provide you with the skills and knowledge to further your career in the legal field.
