Staff Attorney – Foreclosure Prevention Unit (Bronx) #23-264 Organization: Legal Aid Society (LAS) Salary Range/ Salary: $75,345 – $132,914 Job Title: Staff Attorney – Foreclosure Prevention Unit Department: Civil Practice Experience: NYS Bar admission or ready for NYS Bar admission Location: Bronx, NY Introduction: The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Staff Attorney to join their team in the Bronx. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for representing homeowners in foreclosure actions and affirmative litigation, with the goal of preventing the loss of home, loss of equity, and homelessness. The Foreclosure Prevention Unit provides representation and assistance to homeowners to prevent foreclosures and challenge abusive lending and real estate practices. Key Responsibilities: - Represent clients in state and federal court proceedings and affirmative litigation - Represent clients at settlement conferences and advocate with lenders to obtain loss mitigation - Advocate with local, state and federal agencies on behalf of clients - Train, conduct community outreach, and provide education for individuals, local community-based organizations, and housing advocates - Advocate for legislative reforms and policy changes - Coordinate and collaborate with other groups and organizations - Work with pro bono lawyers and partner organizations - Represent the Civil Practice and LAS in the community - Promote the work of the office, the Foreclosure Prevention Unit and the Civil Practice - Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours as needed - Complete administrative tasks as assigned by supervisor, such as those related to grant reporting - Other duties as assigned Requirements: - New York State Bar admission or ready for NYS Bar admission - Familiarity with foreclosure, lending and consumer issues preferred - Litigation skills and experience preferred - Excellent written and oral advocacy skills - Ability to work independently as well as a part of the team and manage a high volume of cases - Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and civil legal services - Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations - Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required Salary Transparency: The Legal Aid Society believes in attracting and retaining exceptional talent committed to serving their clients.
