Supervising Attorney, Tenant Rights Coalition, Bronx Legal Services - Seeking experienced housing attorney for leading role in Tenant Rights Coalition - Part of Legal Services NYC network, largest provider of free civil legal services in the Bronx - Mission to provide equal access to legal system for most vulnerable members of society - Focus on anti-displacement advocacy in the Bronx, addressing housing needs in face of rapid neighborhood changes and gentrification - Team of 22 attorneys and paralegals dedicated to preserving affordable and decent housing and preventing displacement and harassment Responsibilities: - Supervising TRC staff attorneys in individual housing matters and multi-plaintiff affirmative cases - Supervising paralegals providing litigation and administrative support - Regular appearances in civil, supreme, and federal court and administrative proceedings - Reviewing draft pleadings, motions, and court submissions - Filing affirmative cases on behalf of tenants and tenant groups - Working closely with tenant organizers, associations, and community partners to address housing needs - Conducting weekday, evening, and weekend outreach and intake with partners - Shaping direction of Tenant Rights Coalition work in the Bronx Requirements: - Admitted or eligible to waive into the New York State Bar - Passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income and communities of color - Expertise in local, state, and federal housing law and policy, housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits - Experience litigating affirmative cases for individuals or on behalf of groups of tenants - Excellent legal writing, litigation, and advocacy skills - Strong interpersonal, teaching/training, and organizational skills - Strong ties to the Bronx community preferred - Experience working with community-based organizations or enthusiasm for partnering with them - Spanish-speaking preferred but not required Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB): - Bronx Legal Services prides itself on its DEIB efforts - All employees expected to learn about, understand, and work towards DEIB goals - DEIB committee and affinity groups foster collegial relationships and advocate for racial justice and anti-oppression growth within the organization and legal work Hybrid Work Model: - Offices currently operating on hybrid model of in-person and remote work - Staff expected to be in person approximately half of days in pay period Salary and Benefits: - Salary commensurate with experience - Excellent health and dental insurance - Employer contribution to pre-tax 403(b) pension plan - Generous leave time Application: - Send cover letter, resume, two recent writing samples, and names of three references via email to Sandra Sanchez, - Subject line of email should include “Supervising Attorney, Tenant Rights Coalition” Covid Vaccinations: - All employees strongly encouraged to receive and maintain up-to-date vaccinations unless unable to for medical or religious reasons Equal Opportunity Employer: - Bronx Legal Services is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer - People of color, women, people with disabilities, gay, lesbian, people over 40, and transgender people all encouraged to apply Salary Range: - Based on years of experience: $100,000 - $160,000.
