The Home Ownership Protection Program (HOPP) Paralegal position is a full-time opportunity with the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY). The paralegal will work within the Home Ownership Protection Program (HOPP) to provide legal support to individuals facing foreclosure of their home. Some key responsibilities of the HOPP Paralegal position include:

• Communicating effectively and efficiently with clients, either over the phone or in person.

• Interviewing and screening clients facing mortgage or tax foreclosure, assessing the status of their case, and preparing case summaries.

• Explaining the timeline of foreclosure proceedings to clients and triaging cases to the managing attorney for assignment.

• Tracking mortgage and tax foreclosure cases and providing regular status reports to the managing attorney.

• Completing loss mitigation applications for mortgage foreclosure cases under the direction of the managing attorney.

• Maintaining accurate records and statistics for timely reporting.

• Assisting with tasks related to grant reporting.

• Preparing, organizing, storing, and retrieving case files.

• Assisting with trial preparation.

• Collaborating professionally with colleagues, judges, opposing counsel, court personnel, community members, and other stakeholders.

• Demonstrating a commitment to professional growth in diverse areas of law.

• Engaging in outreach and education efforts to reach community members, advocates, and service providers.

• Attending and participating in meetings and trainings as requested.

• Complying with all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and LASMNY policies, procedures, and grant-based reporting requirements.

• Performing responsibilities and duties as assigned by the supervisor based on department needs and requirements.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Bachelor's or Associate's degree, a paralegal certificate, or equivalent education and work experience. Prior office experience, preferably in a legal environment, is also required. The candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income community members and be proficient in Microsoft Office or related software and computerized legal research. Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus, and travel may be required for this position.
