Job description:

The role of Attorney at HDR involves providing contractual support for engineering, architecture, and professional consulting services. The ideal candidate is hardworking, has excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, and is able to anticipate and deliver legal support to meet the needs of a dynamic, diverse, and global business team. They should also possess strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to manage various assignments.

Primary objectives:

The primary duties of this role include reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts for engineering and professional services, as well as providing legal support for project issues. The Attorney will work closely with senior leadership and staff to build a trusted legal partnership. Other responsibilities of the role include conducting risk assessments, participating in negotiations, advising on contract administration and claims avoidance, and collaborating with business group counsel.

Key responsibilities:

- Review, negotiate, and draft contracts for engineering and other professional services
- Conduct risk assessments for contracts, scopes of work, and projects
- Participate in negotiations for contracts and contractual terms
- Advise and assist with project management on contract administration and claims avoidance
- Support project teams and management when project issues or claims arise
- Take the lead role on legal assignments of moderate complexity
- Collaborate with business group counsel to address contractual items or elevate approvals
- Summarize and explain legal terms and risks to senior leadership for higher risk projects
- Participate in project review meetings with operations and business group leadership
- Develop and implement proactive protocols for identifying and managing project risk
- Research and advise on legal issues
- Help develop and implement policies and processes for efficiency and risk management
- Support Legal Department initiatives, including training programs for operational staff
- Review company policies and practices to ensure compliance with applicable laws
- Perform other duties as needed across all HDR companies

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school
- Minimum of 3 years experience practicing law
- Active license to practice law, preferably in Nebraska
- Law firm experience highly preferred
- Background in architecture/engineering or construction contracts, construction industry disputes, or general commercial contracts preferred
- Ability to identify and manage risk
- Collaborative, pragmatic, and flexible approach
- Effective communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong teamwork skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to lead through trusted advising
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and find creative solutions
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and manage competing demands
- Willingness to travel occasionally throughout the United States
