Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is seeking a passionate and dedicated Staff Attorney to join their Tenants' Right to Counsel Project (TRCP) in Southern Maryland. This full-time position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals in Maryland by providing them with life-changing civil legal assistance.

As a Staff Attorney for the TRCP, you will handle a full caseload of eviction cases, advocate before administrative agencies, participate in client intake, and engage in broader advocacy efforts. This role requires a self-starter with excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills. Spanish language proficiency is desirable, and prior experience or interest in public-interest litigation or non-profit legal services is a plus.

MLA is dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. They have a team of over 100 attorneys who strive to level the legal playing field and provide equal access to justice for those most in need. As a Staff Attorney for the TRCP, you will be a part of this mission and gain valuable legal skills in a fast-paced, rigorous, and compassionate work environment.

Roles and Responsibilities:

- Handle a full caseload of eviction cases, including routine trial practice, communication with clients and administrative agencies, negotiations, and writing for litigation.
- Advocate before administrative agencies, including local housing authorities and the state Department of Housing and Community Development.
- Participate in client intake and community outreach initiatives.
- Maintain case records in the LegalServer case management system.
- Continue professional development and education through trainings and programs sponsored by MLA.
- Assist with broader advocacy efforts, including policy advocacy, media engagement, and participation in coalitions and partnerships.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Qualifications:

- Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission.
- Juris Doctorate (.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
- Proficiency with computer and web-based applications, including Office 365.
- Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to provide quality legal advocacy for a low-income and diverse client base.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally in Maryland as needed.
- Knowledge of Westlaw Edge or other legal research software is a plus.
- 1-7 years of post-bar admission legal experience preferred.
- Prior experience or interest in public-interest litigation or non-profit legal services is a plus.
- Spanish language proficiency is desirable.

Work Environment:

Work duties will be performed in a general office setting with regular interaction via telephone, videoconference, instant messaging, email, and in-person. Certain duties may also be performed in community settings.
