Job Title: Managing Counsel, Labor & Employment (Phoenix, Arizona) Experience: Minimum of 10 years related and relevant experience required Salary: $150,000-$200,000 per year, depending on experience Department: Legal Company: PetSmart Location: Phoenix, Arizona (Hybrid work arrangement) Managing Counsel, Labor & Employment is a high-level position within the Legal department at PetSmart. This role reports to the Vice President and Deputy General Counsel and is responsible for leading the labor and employment legal team, providing strategic guidance and support to human resources and senior leaders, and managing employment litigation and outside counsel resources. This position is based in Phoenix, Arizona and may be considered Hybrid based on PetSmart’s FlexSmart policy and business needs. Key Responsibilities: - Serve as the main point of contact for human resources and provide subject matter expertise on labor and employment matters in the US, with oversight in Canada - Stay up to date on legislative trends and changes in the law to proactively advise the business - Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda to provide guidance to the company - Represent the company at the federal and state administrative level (EEOC, DOL and state and local agencies) - Manage employment litigation, develop strategy, and negotiate settlements - Provide training to Human Resources professionals and business leaders on employment law matters - Manage and develop team members within the Labor and Employment department - Manage outside counsel resources and legal fees in accordance with budgetary commitments Requirements: - Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor from accredited institutions - Admitted to a state Bar with in-house admission in Arizona - Minimum of 10 years related and relevant experience - Ability to balance business needs and corporate goals within the appropriate legal framework - Excellent written and oral communication skills - Strong business judgment and interpersonal skills - Ability to prioritize and manage multiple matters simultaneously - Prior in-house experience is preferred Preferred Experience: - Prior experience as managing counsel in a corporate setting - Experience defending wage and hour class actions - Knowledge of labor laws - Experience advising on compliance and risk mitigation for wage and hour exposure - Retail experience is a plus Culture at PetSmart: At PetSmart, every associate is valued and celebrated for their unique background and experiences.
