Organization/Department

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents over 77,000 pilots at 43 . and Canadian airlines. ALPA’s members are not only pilots, but also air traffic controllers, engineers, and other aviation safety professionals. ALPA represents its members’ interests in collective bargaining, safety, and regulatory and legislative matters.



The ALPA represents its members’ interests in collective bargaining, safety, and regulatory and legislative matters. The Labor Relations Counsel will play a critical role in supporting the organization’s mission of promoting and protecting the careers of airline pilots, as well as the safety and security of the airline industry as a whole. They will work closely with pilot governing bodies and individual members to address a range of issues that affect their employment, including negotiations, grievances, and arbitration. The Labor Relations Counsel will also be responsible for managing FAA actions against individual pilots and providing support during NTSB Accident/Incident hearings. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to handle complex labor relations assignments with thorough understanding of applicable laws and Association policies and procedures. The Labor Relations Counsel will also have the opportunity to travel, both domestically and internationally, to represent the interests of ALPA members and engage in negotiations.



Responsibilities

Provide assistance to pilot governing bodies and individual members on all subjects that affect their employment.
Use thorough understanding of applicable laws and comprehensive experience in Association policies and procedures to handle an extensive range of complex labor relations assignments.
Coordinate all activities during negotiations while maintaining communication with all interested parties.
Monitor and administer contracts.
Manage FAA actions against individual pilots.
Prepare summaries of NTSB Accident/Incident hearings.
Actively listen, build trust, and adapt style and tactics to fit the audience.
Travel domestically and internationally as needed.
Respond to safety-related emergency inquiries as needed.
Use independent judgment to formulate decisions and solve problems under time pressure and urgent conditions.
Organize and coordinate long-term projects.
Participate in collective bargaining, grievance, and arbitration processes.
Conduct legal research using online resources.
Communicate effectively with internal staff, external contacts, senior legal and aviation professionals, and pilots.
Utilize Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
Represent the interests of ALPA members in negotiations.
Support ALPA's mission of promoting and protecting the careers of airline pilots and ensuring the safety and security of the airline industry.



Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Law (LLM), or similar advanced degree from an approved school of law.
Member in good standing of the Bar.
Five (5) years of related experience in labor law and litigation.
Experience in collective bargaining, grievance, and arbitration preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to organize and coordinate long-term projects.
Knowledge of the Railway Labor Act and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) preferred.
Experience using online legal research tools.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally, sometimes on short notice.
Ability to handle complex labor relations assignments with thorough understanding of applicable laws and Association policies and procedures.
Strong communication skills and ability to adapt style and tactics to fit the audience.
Ability to use independent judgment to formulate decisions and solve problems under time pressure and urgent conditions.
