Job Description: - The Legal Aid Society, the largest social justice public interest law firm in New York City, is hiring Supervising Attorneys for their Criminal Defense Practice's Trial Division. - The CDP Trial Division provides holistic and client-centered representation to individuals facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges. - The Supervising Attorneys will lead interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, paralegals, and investigators and work closely with the social worker department. - They will also carry a reduced caseload and mentor newer attorneys. - The ideal candidate is a motivated leader with a passion for teaching and mentoring, innovation, and professional development. - They will create and enhance a diverse and affirming workplace culture that supports and collaborates with clients and colleagues. Responsibilities: - Provide high-quality, zealous representation to clients. - Train, mentor, and coach interdisciplinary teams. - Work closely with the social worker department. - Observe hearings and trials, train new lawyers and law students, and evaluate client services. - Carry a reduced caseload and work with newer attorneys as second seats on cases. - Motivate and inspire others to seek innovative and creative approaches to advocacy. - Provide effective performance feedback and evaluation to encourage ongoing development. Requirements: - New York State Bar admission (or ability to waive into New York State from another jurisdiction). - At least 5 years of demonstrated commitment to public defense, social and racial justice, and equity. - Experience as a first chair in felony hearings and trials, sentence mitigation and advocacy. - Knowledge of relevant New York State laws including evidence laws, criminal and constitutional laws, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles. - Ability to build collaborative teams, train, mentor, and coach individuals and groups. - Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
