Job Title: Staff Attorney – Brooklyn or Queens Organization: Communities Resist Location: Brooklyn or Queens Salary: Commensurate with experience Employment Type: Full-time Experience: Relevant experience in housing law and advocacy in Queens or Brooklyn Education: Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish, Bengali, Korean or Mandarin (preferred) H1: Join Our Team as a Staff Attorney in Brooklyn or Queens H2: Advocate for Housing Justice in Communities of Color Job Description: - Communities Resist is seeking a passionate and experienced housing attorney to join our team in combating gentrification, displacement, social disenfranchisement, and structural injustice in Brooklyn or Queens. - As a legal services organization, we have a 50-year tradition of community lawyering and have worked closely with neighborhood organizations and organizers to represent hundreds of tenants and tenant associations. - The staff attorney will work in collaboration with this coalition to preserve and expand affordable housing for lower-income residents in the face of rapid gentrification and tenant displacement. - This position involves representing low-income tenant associations and individuals facing eviction, as well as advocating for fair housing and combating systemic housing discrimination. - The staff attorney will also work closely with local community-based organizations and coalitions to conduct educational workshops and advocate for tenant rights. - Fluency in Spanish, Bengali, Korean or Mandarin is preferred, as well as demonstrated ability to publish articles advocating for clients. - We value cultural competence and encourage applications from individuals who have lived or worked in our clients' communities. - CoRe is an equal opportunity employer and offers excellent health and other benefits. Responsibilities: - Bring innovative, affirmative litigation to protect tenants' rights and their homes. - Defend tenants in eviction proceedings. - Combat systemic housing discrimination through enforcement actions under fair housing laws. - Represent tenants in administrative proceedings. - Provide advice and legal services to improve conditions in tenants' homes and buildings. - Collaborate with local community-based organizations and coalitions to conduct educational workshops and advocate for tenant rights. - Participate in neighborhood advocacy efforts to stop tenant harassment, displacement, and residential segregation. - Contribute to CoRe's efforts to shape housing advocacy and legal strategy. - Attend remote and eventually in-person evening tenant association and community meetings. - Track case data and meet deadlines. - Maintain proficiency in computer skills to track client information, prepare reports, attend meetings, and perform other tasks related to the work.
