Staff Attorney - Immigrant Children's Protection Project (Chicago) Organization: Heartland Alliance Department: Immigrant Children's Protection Project Job Title: Staff Attorney Experience: One year of direct experience in legal representation preferred Language Skills: Ability to read, speak, and write in Spanish Salary Range: $60,878-$71,323 H1: Join Heartland Alliance's Immigrant Children's Protection Project as a Staff Attorney H2: Represent and advocate for detained and non-detained unaccompanied immigrant children The Immigrant Children's Protection Project at Heartland Alliance is seeking a dedicated and experienced Staff Attorney to provide legal representation and counseling to detained and non-detained unaccompanied immigrant children in Chicago. This position also involves advocating for clients before government agencies and other service agencies, as needed. As a Staff Attorney, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of vulnerable immigrant children by providing them with legal support and advocating for their rights. You will also have the chance to work with a dedicated team of professionals and develop your skills in immigration law and procedures. If you are passionate about social justice and have a Juris Doctorate degree, we encourage you to apply for this position. Fluency in Spanish is also required, and additional language skills are preferred. One year of direct experience in legal representation is preferred, but not required. Responsibilities: - Conduct preliminary intake interviews and gather relevant facts for each case - Develop and implement case strategy in accordance with immigration law and procedure - Prepare cases for interviews and hearings, including drafting legal briefs and engaging in negotiation - Provide Know Your Rights presentations to detained children - Maintain current knowledge of immigration law, policies, and procedures - Develop and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders - Interpret immigration laws and policies for the public at outreach events - Adhere to ethical standards for the legal profession and maintain client confidentiality - Maintain complete and accurate client records and conduct case audits - Participate in trainings on immigration law and procedures - Identify trends and recommend strategies for solutions and advocacy - Adhere to professional standards and participate in evaluative reviews and trainings - Other duties as assigned Qualifications: - Juris Doctorate degree - One year of direct experience in legal representation preferred - Ability to read, write, and speak in Spanish - Valid driver's license and ability to drive to and from sites as needed - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills - Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, managers, clients, and the general public - Commitment to social justice and working with vulnerable populations Heartland Alliance offers a competitive salary range of $60,878-$71,323 and comprehensive benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
