This leadership role reports to the Chief Attorney and involves managing and implementing litigation technologies, best practices, and policies to support the practice's mission of providing holistic representation to clients. This person will directly supervise the Discovery Unit and Research Director, and work with other practice leaders to ensure efficient and effective processes and tools are available for client representation. The Legal Aid Society is a renowned organization committed to social justice and providing legal services to those in need. The Criminal Defense Practice is the citywide public defender in New York City, serving over 150,000 people annually through trial and appellate litigation, parole revocation defense, and policy and systemic advocacy. Responsibilities: - Lead and manage the Discovery Unit and Research Unit to support the Trial, Post Conviction, and Law Reforms and Policy Divisions within the Criminal Defense Practice - Represent the Practice and clients at stakeholder meetings to discuss discovery, data collection, court processes, and related topics - Partner with the CITO, COO, and Deputy COO to streamline workflow and achieve goals and objectives - Develop and implement best practices and policies for the use of litigation technologies to effectively represent clients and advocate for marginalized communities - Support and implement updates and tailored functionalities for case management and eDiscovery systems - Ensure high-quality litigation resources and tools are available to all staff for holistic client representation - Develop data auditing procedures and provide training initiatives to modernize legal practices and utilize new information technology platforms - Provide in-service training on new technologies and resources for all staff and volunteers Team Development and Supervision: - Mentor, coach, and supervise direct reports, including setting performance standards and providing professional development opportunities - Manage the annual budget and approve purchases as needed - Attend management meetings and stay current on employment policies and practices - Stay updated on the practice of direct client representation to make informed decisions regarding litigation technologies and resources - Promote equity and inclusion in the workplace through management and supervision practices Professional Development: - Participate in continuous professional development opportunities - Demonstrate inclusive behaviors and continuously learn about bias in the workplace Requirements: - Admission to the New York State Bar - Minimum of 12 years experience as an attorney, with experience in law reform litigation, policy advocacy, and criminal trial or appellate work - Minimum of 5 years experience in a supervisory and leadership role, including managing staff and contributing to professional development - Experience working with case management and eDiscovery information technology platforms - Proficiency in utilizing and supporting the deployment of new technologies in a user-friendly manner - Commitment to advancing racial equity in the criminal legal system - Commitment to diversity and creating an equitable and inclusive work environment - Experience in strategic planning and managing change - Excellent collaboration skills and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in collaborative relationships - Knowledge of state and federal constitutional and civil rights law, particularly in the context of the criminal legal system - Strong written and oral communication skills - Ability to lead through uncertainty and make strategic decisions - Ability to delegate tasks and create systems of accountability - Ability to communicate effectively with diverse perspectives and provide performance feedback for professional development - Ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity in all duties - Understanding of systemic oppression and ability to implement inclusive management practices with an equity mindset - May require travel within New York State and to other states for conferences Salary Transparency: The salary range for this role is $175,000 - $195,000 and will be determined based on candidate qualifications and collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.
