MLA is a non-profit organization providing civil legal assistance to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities in Maryland since 1911. They strive to level the legal playing field and ensure equal access to justice for all.

The Tenants' Right to Counsel Project (TRCP) was established in October 2022 to provide legal representation for Marylanders facing eviction or forced displacement. They are currently seeking a Staff Attorney for their Cecil/Harford office who is passionate about public interest law and social justice. This position is open to admitted attorneys or recent bar-exam takers.

The TRCP team works on multiple fronts, including trial representation, appeals, community outreach, and policy work, to prevent eviction and homelessness. They also prioritize training, professional development, and mentorship for their staff attorneys. This is a fast-paced and rigorous work environment that offers both new and experienced attorneys the opportunity to gain valuable legal skills.

Responsibilities:

- Handle a full caseload of full representation and same-day representation in court proceedings for eviction cases
- Advocate before administrative agencies
- Participate in client intake and maintain case records
- Continue professional development through trainings and other programs
- Assist with broader advocacy efforts, including policy advocacy, media, and public speaking
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

- Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission
- Juris Doctorate (.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence
- Proficiency in using computer programs such as Office 365
- Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to travel locally and regionally
- Knowledge of legal research software and prior experience in public-interest litigation or non-profit legal services is a plus
- Spanish language proficiency is desirable

Work Environment:

- General office setting with regular interaction via telephone, videoconference, and email
- Some work may also be performed in community settings
