Overview

Exempla Healthcare's roots extend deep into the community and the history of the area. Saint Joseph Hospital was founded in 1873 and is the oldest private teaching hospital in Colorado. Lutheran Medical Center was founded in 1905 as the Evangelical Lutheran Sanitarium to treat tuberculosis patients.

Exempla was formed in 1998 bringing together the two hospitals and the Exempla Physician Network in a commitment to provide responsive healthcare to the communities served. Exempla is a not-for-profit organization sponsored by the LMC Community Foundation and the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System.

Both Lutheran Medical Center and Saint Joseph Hospital have reputations for excellence. Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital moved up in U. S. News & World Report�s 2002 "Best Hospitals" ranking in Gynecology Services this year. Saint Joseph Hospital is included for the second year in the magazine�s annual list of the nation�s best hospitals. It ranks in the top 50 for Gynecology and Rheumatology services.

In December of 2002, the Solucient Institute recognized Exempla Lutheran Medical Center as one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation. The December recognition marked the fifth time that Lutheran Medical Center has received this award, and it is the only Colorado hospital to receive the award so consistently.

In October, Solucient published a list in Modern Healthcare of 85 hospitals that had consistently been recognized in its annual study, "100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success." Both Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital were included on the list. Saint Joseph Hospital has received the 100 Top Hospitals award four times.
