Eligibility Basic law degree (usually LL.B. or J.D.) from home country (two or more years of work experience preferred)

Students must have graduated from an accredited U.S. law school, possess an undergraduate law degree from a foreign institution of higher education, or have equivalent government experience or training in intellectual property law. Students holding an LL.B. from a non-U.S. law school are required to take a two-semester course: Introduction to U.S. Law and Legal Methods.

Curriculum Vitae How applicants present themselves and their credentials to potential employers is crucial. Course Requirement
LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Technology Law A student must successfully complete 24 credit hours of courses from the IP/TL curriculum, including at least one seminar in which a research paper is required. The seminar requirement serves as a thesis requirement. Students may also earn up to six credit hours from related courses, such as courses in microbiology or in information technology.
LL.M. in Taxation Students must satisfactorily complete 24 credits in the tax curriculum.
LL.M. in U.S. Law for Foreign Lawyers (On Campus) U.S. Law LL.M. candidates must have earned a first law degree from their home jurisdiction.
LL.M. in Negotiation & Dispute Resolution Students must satisfactorily complete 15 credits in the Negotiation & Dispute Resolution curriculum out of 24 required credits for graduation.

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Intellectual Property and Technology Law is a one-year graduate degree program that responds to the demand for knowledgeable and skilled intellectual property professionals who have already earned a basic law degree. The IP/TL curriculum allows students to study introductory and advanced intellectual property law and to scrutinize the policies affecting these areas of the law under the guidance of leading scholars in the field. Students participate in practical skills courses taught in small groups by teams of experienced intellectual property lawyers.

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation program at Washington University School of Law offers a rigorous course of study in the field of tax law. The program (for which an online application is available or a printed application may be downloaded) provides comprehensive and specialized training to lawyers and law school graduates who wish to specialize in tax. Their full-time faculty and leading practitioners in the field offer specialized, practical training and individualized attention in small class sizes (typically fewer than ten students).

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in U.S. Law for Foreign Lawyers at Washington University is designed for law students who are interested in increasing their knowledge of United States or international law to more effectively practice in today's global legal environment. LL.M. students join a student body drawn from diverse legal cultures and learn from faculty who are experts in both United States and international law.

The LL.M. in Negotiation & Dispute Resolution at Washington University School of Law is lawyers who would like to be versed in negotiation, problem-solving, collaboration, and creative dispute resolution for practicing successfully in today's world.

Financial Aid


Scholarships for LLM Students: There are a limited number of merit-based scholarships available for The LLM programs. Applicants to the LLM program should check with the individual programs about the Possibility of scholarship.

Federal Student Loans - Washington University participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. This means that students receive all federal student loan funds directly from the U.S. Department of Education. The borrower must be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen to apply for Federal student loans.

The different types of federal student loans offered to graduate students are: Perkins, Unsubsidized Stafford and Graduate PLUS Loans.

Good Credit: Eligibility for the Grad PLUS and alternative loan programs is based on each student's past credit history. Lenders review each applicant's credit to determine whether it meets the lender's established credit criteria for receiving the loan. A borrower must prove to be credit worthy and for this reason final eligibility for these programs rests with the lender. The university strongly suggest that a student with past credit problems remedy the problem before applying for these loans. The School of Law cannot replace these loans should a student be denied for credit reasons.
