Admission Information


Requirements Details
Eligibility Applicants must have a law degree from a law school outside of the United States. Additionally, preference is given to individuals with two or more years of work experience. Applicants whose native language is not English must also demonstrate proficiency in English, most commonly through achieving a score of 550/213/79-80 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Strong preference is given to candidates with TOEFL scores of 600/250/100. IELTS scores are also accepted.

Details of Courses Offered


The University of Minnesota Law School has expanded its prominent LL.M. program to provide foreign business lawyers with a rigorous business law experience, exposing them to a broad array of legal skills and knowledge crucial to the global practice of business law. Students enrolling in the Business Law LL.M. program are required to satisfy the Business Law Concentration requirements and write a scholarly paper on a business law topic.

LL.M. business law students view the inner workings of resident multinational companies through on-site visits to corporate headquarters. These corporate experience visits, including 3M, Piper Jaffray and UnitedHealth Group this year, consist of informative presentations by company personnel, question and answer sessions, and a reception where Business Law LL.M. students can network with their U.S. business counterparts.

The University of Minnesota Law School offers J.D. and LL.M. students an excellent opportunity to study criminal justice and help prepare them for the wide range of opportunities available in this field. Nationally renowned faculty teach courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, juvenile justice, sentencing law and policy, punishment theory, and other important topics in criminal justice. Top criminal justice lawyers and judges serving as adjunct professors provide valuable mentoring and networking opportunities for students. Students can further immerse themselves in criminal justice theory, law, policy, and practice through seminars, clinics, lectures, and research projects. In addition, students have access to interdisciplinary courses and seminars, student groups, and all the educational events and facilities that the University offers.

The University of Minnesota Law School offers J.D. and LL.M. students a thorough grooming in environmental and energy law to help them prepare to practice in a wide range of areas in these fields. Nationally and internationally renowned faculty teach courses in environmental law, natural resources law, environmental justice, renewable energy law, water law, climate change, land use, and international environmental law, among others. Top environmental and energy lawyers serving as adjunct professors provide valuable mentoring and networking opportunities for students. Through innovative capstone courses, clinics, and seminars, students engage in simulated exercises in the fields of environmental and energy law and work with members of the community on cutting-edge policy development. Students can further immerse themselves in the fields through seminars, lectures, externship programs, mentorship programs, student organizations, and interdisciplinary opportunities throughout the University of Minnesota, including the Institute on the Environment and the Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment and the Life Sciences.

J.D. and LL.M. students immerse themselves in a wide range of interdisciplinary courses, addressing the legal implications of law and bioethics, health care delivery, health care reform, genetics and assisted reproduction, mental health issues, insurance, and food and drug law.

J.D. and LL.M. law students studying human rights immerse themselves in international human rights law, choosing from a wide variety of courses, including American Indian law, civil rights, immigration, and the death penalty.

The University of Minnesota Law School offers J.D. and LL.M. students a deep insight into intellectual property and technology to help prepare them for practice in a wide range of areas in these fields. Nationally and internationally renowned faculty teach basic and advanced courses in the core doctrines of intellectual property (IP)-patent, copyright, trademark, and unfair competition-as well as complimentary legal topics such as international IP, privacy, biotechnology, neuroscience, and the First Amendment.

The University of Minnesota Law School offers J.D. and LL.M. students the opportunity to study international law to help them prepare for practice in a wide range of areas in both public and private international law. Nationally and internationally renowned faculty teach courses in international law, international trade law, human rights, foreign relations, international intellectual property among others. Top international law lawyers serving as adjunct professors provide valuable mentoring and networking opportunities for students. Through parallel clinics, moot court opportunities, and seminars, students engage in simulated exercises in the field of international law. Internship opportunities provide exposure to and experience with international organizations. Students can further immerse themselves in the fields through seminars, lectures, externship programs, mentorship programs, student organizations, and interdisciplinary opportunities throughout the University of Minnesota, including the world-renowned Human Rights Center.

The University of Minnesota Law School offers J.D. and LL.M. students a unique setup to study the dynamic field of labor and employment law. Drawing from the expertise of nationally renowned faculty, practitioners of labor and employment law, and partnerships with other University of Minnesota programs, students can immerse themselves in interdisciplinary courses and seminars, simulation courses, clinical programs, externships and an active student organization.

Scholarships are based on admission applications and are awarded at the time of admission. Admitted students are reviewed for a scholarship at the time of admittance; no separate application is required.

The University of Minnesota Law School's Career Center is committed to supporting and educating University of Minnesota Law School students and alumni throughout all stages of their professional development. The Career Center helps students and alumni develop the professional experience and connections that will give them access to employers throughout Minnesota and the nation.

As an institution with an exceptional national reputation, the Law School is focused on helping students and graduates find positions with all types of legal employers throughout the country. The law school's well-trained graduates work in all 50 states, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Guam, Puerto Rico, and many other locations around the world. They work for premier law firms, boutique practices, federal agencies and departments, state and local governments, public interest organizations, and major companies.

A wide variety of local, regional, national and international law firms, corporations, public agencies and judicial clerkships meet students annually through Career Center-sponsored programs. Interviewing and networking events take place both on campus and off campus in cities such as New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Students also participate in the Equal Justice Works Conference in Washington, D.C., and the Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference in Chicago among other national career fairs.

The Center offers career workshops and programs throughout the year and counsels students and alumni on establishing and meeting professional goals.
