An Overview


The University of Florida Levin College of Law has a longstanding tradition of producing national leaders and is one of the nation's best values in legal education.

This law school is dedicated to advancing human dignity, social welfare, and justice through knowledge and study of the nation's laws.

The mission of the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law is to achieve excellence in educating professionals, advancing legal scholarship, serving the public, and fostering justice. UF Law aspires to prepare lawyers to serve their clients, the justice system, and the public with a high level of accomplishment and a commitment to the highest ideals of the legal profession. UF Law strives to provide students with a well-rounded legal education. UF Law's curriculum is designed to teach students about the law and to help them develop the skills necessary to use that knowledge in practice. UF Law's goal is to enable graduates to possess the core competencies essential to embark on the practice of law. These core competencies include:
  • Legal Analysis (including knowledge of laws and rules, the ability to apply laws and rules to different factual settings, and the ability to engage in legal argumentation);

Requirements Details
Eligibility Enrollment is limited to applicants who have attained a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from a law school that is a member of the Association of American Law Schools or from a law school that is accredited by the American Bar Association
Transcripts Copies of the candidate's transcripts from all college or universities he/she attended
Letters of Recommendation Two letters of recommendation. UF Law prefers that at least one of the letters be from a law school professor. If letters will be sent directly from the writers to the law school, candidates are requested to include the names and contact information of the their recommenders. The letters should address the applicant's abilities and whatever strengths the writer believes the applicant should possess that will aid the applicant in successful completion of the program.
Personal Statement In 500 words or less, any additional information the applicant believes to be relevant to his/her application should be provided. UF Law is particularly interested in the following: a) Why the candidate is seeking an LL.M. degree, b) Why is he/she interested in obtaining an LL.M. degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law, and c) The candidate's career goals over the next 5-10 years.
Proof of Competency in English Under certain circumstances a TOEFL examination report may be required.
Application Fee $30
Law School Admission Test A copy of LSAT/LSDAS report (usually, the candidate's law school may be able to provide a copy).
Curriculum Vitae A completed application must be accompanied by a Personal Statement; curriculum vitae or resume; official transcript and diploma for each completed university degree; and at least two letters of recommendation. Documents must be in English or accompanied by certified translations.

To earn an LL.M. degree in the Specialized Programs, students are required to get:

Course Requirement
LL.M. in Comparative Law Program Standard 26-credit course of instruction LL.M. students are subject to the Graduate Catalog's rules regarding a minimum 3.0 grade point average on the University's 4.0 scale
LL.M. in Environmental and Land Use Law The LL.M. degree is awarded upon completion of 26 credit hours of coursework with a B average that includes completion of the required courses listed below and the written project.
  • Research Methods in Environmental and Land Use Law (1 credit)
  • Environmental Law* (3 credits)
  • Natural Resources Law* (3 credits)
  • Land Use Planning and Control Law *(3 or 4 credits)
  • Administrative Law (3 credits), or Florida Administrative Law (2 or 3 credits)*
  • Capstone Colloquium (1 credit)
  • 6 credit hours of coursework in courses listed outside the law school or jointly listed by the law school and another department and approved by the LL.M. Program Director.
LL.M. in Taxation The degree of Master of Laws in Taxation is awarded upon the satisfactory completion of at least 26 semester credit hours with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale).
LL.M. in International Taxation The degree requires the satisfactory completion of 26 semester credit hours in taxation or other approved courses, with at least 13 of these credit hours in international tax courses, and with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Details of Courses Offered


LL.M. in Comparative Law: The LL.M. in Comparative Law Program is designed almost exclusively for persons having completed degrees in law at universities and law schools outside the United States who want to enhance their understanding of the legal system of the United States of America and the English common law system from which it evolved. (The Director will determine whether or not the degree or degrees in law held by any applicant are sufficient to qualify them for entry into UF Law's program). The program also admits J.D. graduates of ABA-Accredited law schools in the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico who wish to study law in an English-dominant environment.

LL.M. in Environmental and Land Use Law: This one-year, post-J.D. program provides an opportunity to spend an academic year full-time on the beautiful University of Florida campus developing in-depth expertise in environmental and land use law. The University of Florida is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, which includes the 61 leading research universities in North America. The LL.M. program is unique in that 6 of the 26 required must be from relevant graduate-level courses in UF departments outside of the law school, including offerings in wildlife ecology, interdisciplinary ecology, environmental engineering, and soil & water science.

LL.M. in Taxation: For over 30 years, the University of Florida Graduate Tax Program has helped prepare students for careers in tax law. Today, the program is widely recognized by tax scholars and practitioners nationwide as one of the nation's leading programs for the advanced study of tax law. Its one-year course of study leads to the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation. The program is designed for full-time degree candidates, with classes held during the day.

LL.M. in International Taxation: For over 30 years, the Graduate Tax Program at the University of Florida Levin College of Law has established itself as one of the premier tax programs in the world, drawing students from throughout the United States and numerous foreign countries.

Financial Aid


Latin American-Caribbean Scholarships: Students from Latin America and the Caribbean may qualify for a partial scholarship to be used to pay a portion of their tuition. In addition, students who receive the scholarship will quality for in-state tuition.

Admitted students are considered for all available financial aid, including scholarships and research assistantship appointments that may significantly reduce the cost of attending.

Latin American Students: Students from Latin America may qualify for a partial scholarship to be used to pay a portion of their tuition. In addition, students from Latin America receiving a scholarship will qualify to pay tuition at the rate applicable to Florida residents.

Linkage Institute Programs: PThe state of Florida has established linkage institute programs for several countries and regions. A limited number of well-qualified students who are citizens of "linkage" countries are permitted to pay resident rather than non-resident tuition for a specified number of credit hours. Linkage programs currently exist for the following countries and regions: Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean, China, Costa Rica, Eastern Europe, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico and West Africa.

Graduate Assistantships: Each year the Graduate Tax Program employs a number of students as Graduate Assistants. A Graduate Assistant works with a member of the tax faculty as a research assistant on projects that the faculty member has developed. Each person who receives an assistantship is classified, for the period of the appointment, as a Florida resident for tuition purposes, and is also awarded a stipend and a partial tuition waiver, or a stipend and a scholarship.

Also, the cost of living in Gainesville is known to be quite moderate, an estimated $17,000 for books, supplies, clothing, computer, food, insurance, room and transportation.

Career Development/Services Offered


The Center for Career Development (CCD) is here for each student. Whether it is an employer seeking to hire a well-qualified law student or alumni, or a law student entering the employment market or alumni in transition - the CCD will help.

The CCD coordinates recruiting activities between students, alumni and employers, and provides law students and alumni with a wide range of career resources, including individual career counseling and career education workshops and programs. The Center also administers the Pro Bono and Community Service Programs, the Judicial Clerkship Program and the Small Firms Project.
