An Overview


Texas Tech University prides itself on being a major comprehensive research university that retains the sense of a smaller liberal arts institution. Admission Information


Requirements Details
Eligibility Applicants to the Texas Tech University School of Law LL.M. in U.S. Legal Studies must have graduated from a law school outside the United States. Applicants must have the first/basic degree in law from a non-U.S. law school approved by the TTU Law admissions committee and a superior academic record that demonstrates the ability to perform well in the LL.M. program.
Transcripts Official copies of all university transcripts submitted through the LSAC's LL.M. Credential Assembly Service.
Letters of Recommendation At least 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Must be in English or accompanied by certified translations. Reserve the right to not accept letters that have been written or translated, in part or whole, by the applicant.
  • At least one (1) letter of recommendation should be from a law professor. If the student graduated more than two years ago, a letter from a work supervisor is acceptable.
  • Recommenders may include the following information in their letters: how long and in what capacity they have known the applicant, the applicant's strengths and weaknesses, an evaluation of the applicant's oral and written English skills, and the applicant's preparedness and aptitude for graduate legal studies.
Personal Statement Statement of Purpose (2-3 pages) - The Statement of Purpose should be no more than three double-spaced pages and written in English, not translated. It must be the student's own original work and be prepared without the assistance of other people or professional services. There is no specific format for this statement; however applicants must address why they need to earn a LL.M. in U.S. Legal Studies and how doing so furthers the professional goals.
Proof of Competency in English A TOEFL score of at least 100 (Internet), 250 (computer), or 600 (paper) or an IELTS score of at least 7. Applicants must have their scores sent directly to the LSAC LL.M. Credential Assembly Service by the testing agency. Scores must be less than two years old. Applicants who have earned a degree from an institution in the U.S. or another English-speaking country are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.
Application Fee Texas Tech charges no application fee when applying to the LL.M. program.
Law School Admission Test No, the LSAT is not required for the LL.M. program.
Curriculum Vitae Resume or CV - a copy of a current resume or CV detailing the complete work and educational history and any information that is evaluating the application should be attached.

Application Procedure/Time to apply/Application deadline The Preferred Deadline for submission of any application is 1 March, but late applications will be considered on a space available basis. Applications will be evaluated, and invitations to participate in the 2013-2014 LL.M. class will be extended on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged.
LL.M. Degree Requirements The planned curriculum requires students to complete 24 credit-hours. LL.M. students may enroll in most courses offered in the J.D. program.

Details of Courses Offered


The two-semester Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in United States Legal Studies at Texas Tech University School of Law is designed for graduates of foreign law schools who are interested in a formal program of study of the U.S. legal system. The American Bar Association (ABA) has acquiesced in the establishment of the LL.M. Program, and the Program was approved by both the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission of Colleges.

Financial Aid


Dean's Scholars: All applicants to the LL.M. program are considered for special recognition as one of a limited number of Dean's Scholars.

Texas Tech LL.M. Merit Scholarship: LL.M. candidates not qualifying for the Dean's Scholar recognition will be considered for other competitive scholarships, saving candidates as much as $8,000. LL.M. candidates are eligible for a competitive $1,000 scholarship to help students qualify for resident tuition, rather than non-resident tuition. Once the scholarship is applied to the tuition amount, the final cost of the program will be approximately $29,195.

Study Abroad Competitive Scholarship (SACS): The Study Abroad Competitive Scholarship (SACS) is a scholarship funded by a $4 International Education Fee charged to all Texas Tech students each semester. The scholarship is competitive and funding is awarded to currently-enrolled international students seeking a degree from Texas Tech University.

Award amounts vary from semester to semester, but generally range from $350-$2,000 per semester. The SACS is awarded twice a year. International students may apply more than once to receive awards. The deadline for submitting applications for the SAC Scholarship for fall semesters is generally mid to late February, while the deadline for spring semesters is generally the first week of October; but students should consult the SACS website for specific deadlines because there are no exceptions for late applications.

Public and Private Scholarship Opportunities: Many public and private organizations, as well as governments may provide financial assistance to help a student fund their LL.M. studies. Career Development/Services Offered


The Career Services Center at the Texas Tech University School of Law offers a wide range of services to students and alumni of the law school. With a goal of educating students and fostering development of career planning skills, the Career Services Center serves as a liaison among students, alumni, and employers and is staffed by Director and licensed attorney Paula Smith, Attorney and Associate Director Ashley Withers, and Senior Business Assistant Jennie Payne.
