Organize the compensation and advancement better. Offer more support to staff.


Pros : The lawyers and staff are smart and educated. There is a great amount of personal development. I learned a lot here.
Cons : The compensation and advancement structure is very complicated. There is a lack of support from management.

If you are looking for stability with benefits then this is a great law firm to work for but if you are looking for variety and opportunities to advance your career then this would not be a firm that you would want to build a future with.


Pros : This firm has is a steady place to work for. They offer great benefits packages with a variety of offerings. The company is large so there will be plenty of work and there is never a question of if you will be able to get a case to work on. The company has a long history and will be here for the long haul.
Cons : The firm struggles with organization and communications. Upper management could do better with working with others. The office can also be somewhat mundane as you will get the same types of cases day in and day out. You will also be required to put in very long days.

  • Foley has extended its legal services to some of the notable clients such as Johnson Controls, Harley Davidson, Major League Baseball and Acciona.
  • The firm represented Guggenheim Baseball Management in its acquisition of the Los Angeles Dodgers, marking the single largest transaction ever for a professional sports franchise. This complex transaction, valued at over $2 billion, involved a unique and highly competitive sale process and an aggressive timeline.
  • IT represented Quad/Graphics, Inc. in the acquisition of World Color Press Inc. and related acquisition financing (with combined market capitalization of approximately $2 billion). As a result of the deal, Quad/Graphics became a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE.
  • Obtained allowances for EnGeneIC Molecular Delivery Pty Ltd. in the United States, Europe, and Japan for patent claims critical to the client's global effort to develop a paradigm-breaking technology for delivery of therapeutic molecules, including interfering RNAs.

Summer associate program

Summer associates in Foley & Lardner's eight-week summer program work on an average of 15 assignments that they choose through an online database of available assignments. Summer associates get US$ 2500 per week as summer compensation. Training is provided through 'Foley Academy,' while the firm offers a large variety of pro bono opportunities to its summer associates.

Foley has a free-market system where associates are responsible for getting their own work. Senior counsel and associates have to record a minimum of 1850 billable hours and a minimum of 150 investment time hours during the firm's billable year.

Foley offers a full spectrum of weekly in-house and external training programs, as well as a formal mentoring program.

Associates look for the opportunity to do cutting-edge work while maintaining a healthy work/life balance. While some aspects such as opaque compensation system, more committees and procedures than the federal government and an identity crisis for the firm play as a drag, there are positives such as Midwestern work ethic and friendliness, access to national-level work, even in regional offices and reasonable hours make it attractive to work at Foley.

The firm has one partnership track, averaging eight to ten years to eligibility.
