Hiring Criteria

Foley & Lardner LLP follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

Foley offers opportunities to every law professional to develop, advance, and excel in his/her respective career. The firm encourages teamwork, community involvement, and work-life balance.

The firm is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. It looks for students who can think 'outside the box' and are eager to confront new challenges and responsibilities. The hiring process is not formula-driven, and a legal career here is more than a stack of briefs and endless contracts.

Foley also recruits through placement and job fairs. The firm visited 32 law schools in 2011 for campus recruitments, while it participated in 10 job fairs during the year.

Pro bono

Foley encourages associates to do pro bono work. A maximum of 100 pro bono hours will be counted towards billable and bonus requirements. In 2010, on average, a notable 100 % of associates performed 106 hours of pro bono work each. The firm has increased its focus on pro bono efforts towards immigration and asylum law as well as civil and children's rights.

Arts & artists, post-conviction representation, attention to the needs of children and individual rights are some of the other pro bono areas of work for the firm.

In less than four years, Foley increased its total annual pro bono hours by 192 percent and more than doubled the number of attorneys performing pro bono work.

At Foley & Lardner, diversity is both a moral imperative and a competitive advantage. The firm embraces diversity within its workforce and promotes equal opportunities for all of its attorneys and staff.

The dedication towards diversity is reflected in the firm's Statement of Core values, "the inclusion of our diverse attorneys and staff and to [support] the success of all our people."

The firm seeks to recruit, retain, and promote individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, age, religion, or disability.

The firm is committed to hire at least 20% minority associates in each associate and summer associate class.

Summer associate program

Summer associates in Foley & Lardner's eight-week summer program work on an average of 15 assignments that they choose through an online database of available assignments. Summer associates get US$ 2500 per week as summer compensation. Training is provided through 'Foley Academy,' while the firm offers a large variety of pro bono opportunities to its summer associates.

Working for the Foley & Lardner LLP

Foley has a free-market system where associates are responsible for getting their own work. Senior counsel and associates have to record a minimum of 1850 billable hours and a minimum of 150 investment time hours during the firm's billable year.

Foley offers a full spectrum of weekly in-house and external training programs, as well as a formal mentoring program.

Associates look for the opportunity to do cutting-edge work while maintaining a healthy work/life balance. While some aspects such as opaque compensation system, more committees and procedures than the federal government and an identity crisis for the firm play as a drag, there are positives such as Midwestern work ethic and friendliness, access to national-level work, even in regional offices and reasonable hours make it attractive to work at Foley.

The firm has one partnership track, averaging eight to ten years to eligibility.
