Apart from general hiring criteria Cooley prefers candidates with strong law school and undergraduate record and high academic achievement, excellent writing and research skills, involvement in extracurricular activities, strong interpersonal skills, initiative, highly motivated, work experience & evidence of team work.
Interviews at Cooley aren't just about grades and academics - recruiters want to see that candidates are driven, energetic, bright and focused. The firm conducts on-campus interviews at many schools.
Interested candidates should apply online with a completed application form, current resume, law school transcript, undergraduate transcript, other graduate program transcript. Candidates may also submit a writing sample.

Cooley regularly takes on asylum matters, representing individuals who have been the subject of persecution in their home countries. Cooley teamed with the American Civil Liberties Union in a class action lawsuit on behalf of immigration detainees at San Diego Correctional Facility (SDCF), charging that chronically severe overcrowding placed detainee' health and safety at risk and was unconstitutional.
Serving as pro bono co-counsel with the Legal Aid Society, Cooley litigators in New York won summary judgment in a suit challenging New York State's routine shackling of the children it transports between detention facilities and courts. Cooley pro bono client David Lemus was acquitted in early December 2007 in a high-profile retrial of a 1992 case in which he was convicted of murder.

The type of assignments associates can expect to receive are drafting and participating in the negotiation of venture capital investment documents; writing pleadings and motions for filing in court; preparing for and attending depositions and preparing incorporation documents for start-up companies. The firm also offers workshops on negotiation skills, client counseling and depositions.
