Job Description: The Assistant Public Defender II & III positions require exceptional trial skills, innovative thinking, investigative skills, and the ability to work independently in managing an active felony caseload. Attorneys work in conjunction with social workers and core staff in a team-oriented environment. The position also requires a balance between client-centered representation and addressing systemic inequity and collateral consequences. Responsibilities: - Represent clients in all stages of their criminal case, including bail hearings, motions hearings, trials, and appeals. - Conduct legal research and analysis to prepare for trial and anticipate legal problems. - Draft legal documents and correspondences for clients. - Communicate effectively with clients, team members, and other stakeholders. - Negotiate with prosecutors, judges, and other stakeholders for favorable outcomes for clients. - Provide post-representation follow-up with clients. - Manage a full caseload independently. - Continuously seek professional and personal development. - Other duties as assigned by the Public Defender. Qualifications: - Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. - Experience as a practicing Attorney. - Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state. - Strong commitment to serving marginalized communities. - Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. - Dedication to addressing systemic racism and prejudice in the criminal justice system. - Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds. - Ability to work in a fast-paced, diverse, team-oriented environment. - Criminal trial experience required, with felony jury trial experience preferred. Salary and Benefits: - Salary ranges from $93, to $135,, depending on experience. - State of Maryland employees may receive a lateral transfer. - Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
