Job Overview: A law firm is seeking an experienced International Trade Associate Attorney to provide comprehensive legal counsel on regulatory matters related to international trade. The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years of relevant export control experience, demonstrating a strong understanding of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). The role involves advising clients on export controls, conducting complex research, and contributing to trade-related M&A due diligence.

Duties:

  • Advise clients on regulatory matters, ensuring compliance with export controls administered by BIS and DDTC.
  • Provide expertise on export classifications and obtain CCATS and/or Commodity Jurisdictions (CJs).
  • Facilitate the acquisition of export licenses and assist clients with ITAR registrations.
  • Prepare and review TAAs/MLAs/WDAs and Voluntary Self-Disclosures.
  • Analyze jurisdiction under the EAR, including applying Foreign Direct Product Rules.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of encryption controls and related issues.
  • Perform trade-related M&A due diligence and risk assessments.
  • Communicate effectively with clients through various channels (telephone, email, video, on-site).
  • Draft legal memoranda covering a broad range of international trade law topics.
  • Provide direct support to senior lawyers in day-to-day legal service provision.

Requirements:

  • 3-6 years of relevant export control experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of EAR and ITAR.
  • Technical expertise in engineering or experience in encryption, software, semiconductors, AI, quantum computing, or emerging technologies (a plus).
  • Strong academic record and intellectual curiosity.
  • Commercial and business awareness.
  • Ability to comprehend the big picture and provide strategic advice.
  • Outstanding communication and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent time management skills, and ability to handle multiple projects under pressure.
