Job Overview:

The Tax Controversy Counsel will be responsible for providing legal representation and counsel to clients involved in tax disputes. Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax litigation proceedings before various courts, including tax court.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on tax controversy matters, including civil and criminal issues.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support clients' cases and develop effective strategies.
  • Prepare and file legal documents, pleadings, and motions related to tax disputes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external experts to build strong cases and achieve favorable outcomes for clients.
  • Negotiate settlements and agreements with tax authorities on behalf of clients.
  • Stay updated on changes in tax laws, regulations, and court rulings relevant to tax controversy practice.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior attorneys and staff members.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • LLM in Taxation is required.
  • 8-10 years of experience in tax litigation, with a focus on tax controversy matters.
  • Demonstrated experience in tax court proceedings.
  • Strong understanding of civil and criminal tax laws and regulations.
  • Familiarity with whistleblower claims and voluntary offshore disclosures is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Licensed to practice law in South Carolina.
