Northwest Justice Project (NJP) is currently seeking a qualified Staff Attorney for their Vancouver office. This is a temporary position that is expected to last for six months. NJP is a not-for-profit statewide law firm with a mission of combatting injustice, strengthening communities, and protecting human dignity. They provide high-quality legal advocacy to individuals and families in or near poverty, with a focus on promoting long-term well-being through legal representation, community partnerships, education, and other advocacy efforts.

NJP requires all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, with proof of vaccination being a condition of employment. However, exemptions may be requested based on medical or religious beliefs. The Vancouver staff attorney will work collaboratively with the office team to provide legal assistance and direct representation to eligible clients in various forums, including state, federal, administrative agencies, and appellate courts. They will also use strategic methods and advocacy tools to address the high priority needs of low-income individuals and groups, including immigrants, youth, seniors, and disabled persons.

The staff attorney will also develop working relationships with a statewide network of advocates and participate in advocacy task forces to address systemic issues affecting seniors, low-income individuals, and communities in Washington. They will engage with the client community and participate in legal education events, as well as utilize NJP's case management and timekeeping systems. Other responsibilities include identifying and developing online resources, supporting the work of NJP partners, and working collaboratively with other units at NJP to serve low-income clients throughout the state.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience in civil litigation, with a focus on issues impacting low-income individuals in Washington. Experience in family law and/or employment law is a plus, as well as experience in affirmative litigation and addressing systemic issues.

Applicants should be culturally competent and have experience working with low-income communities, communities of color, limited English speakers, and persons with disabilities. They must also be a member of the Washington State Bar Association in good standing or be able to acquire membership through reciprocity or by taking the next Washington bar exam. Willingness to work in Vancouver and travel throughout Clark, Klickitat, and Skamania Counties is necessary.

NJP values candidates with experience and/or connections to their client communities, especially those with a commitment to race equity. The starting salary for this position is based on years of experience and ranges from $73,142 to $133,712 annually. NJP also offers compensation for those regularly using languages other than English in their work and a comprehensive benefits package, including 100% paid employee health premiums and generous time off. The typical office hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, but attorneys are expected to work the hours needed to fulfill their professional responsibilities.
