Deputy General Counsel - Earthjustice

Earthjustice, a premier nonprofit environmental law organization, is seeking a Deputy General Counsel to join their team. With offices across the country, Earthjustice takes on the biggest and most precedent-setting environmental cases to protect people's health, preserve wildlife, advance clean energy, and combat climate change. The Deputy General Counsel will serve as the lead legal advisor to all environmental program Vice Presidents, Managing Attorneys, Senior Attorneys, and other program staff. They will also partner with the General Counsel and other attorneys on business and data security issues. This role will have a significant impact on the organization and requires a high level of understanding of legal technology and best practices. The successful candidate should be a good planner, consensus builder, and able to persuade others to achieve timely results. This position reports directly to the General Counsel and is based in San Francisco.

Salary & Benefits:

- Competitive salary with ranges of $208,000 to $231,000 for San Francisco or New York-based candidates and $197,000 to $219,000 for Washington, ., Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Honolulu-based candidates.

Responsibilities:

Program Legal Advice (75%)

- Provide legal advice on lobbying compliance and partner with other leaders to ensure appropriate registration and reporting in each state and local jurisdiction.
- Serve as the primary legal advisor to the Program on ethics compliance issues.
- Conduct legal research on a variety of subjects and interpret laws, rulings, and regulations as they apply to Earthjustice.
- Identify topics for legal compliance training for all lawyers in areas such as ethics, lobbying, c3 and c4 compliance, and other areas as needed.
- Serve as the lead legal advisor on projects to improve onboarding of new program lawyers.

Supervisory Responsibilities (15%):

- Directly supervise the Senior Counsel for Conflicts and Lobbying Compliance Deputy.
- Contribute to recruiting, hiring, developing, and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Contracts and Risk Management (10%):

- Review or draft contracts as needed and update contract templates.
- Consult with external and internal experts and select and supervise outside counsel when necessary.
- Assist the General Counsel with identifying and assessing organizational risk exposure and provide advice and best practices to mitigate risk.

Qualifications:

- .
- Minimum of 15 years of successful experience practicing law.
- Experience with cost-effective management of outside legal resources.
- Experience drafting and revising contracts.
- Experience leading projects in a law firm or legal department context.
- Solid knowledge of law firm best practices.
- Solid level of knowledge of legal technology.
- Expert level of knowledge about best litigation discovery practices.
- Experience in analyzing and addressing legal ethics matters.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Litigation-based practice experience.
- Experience with technology used in law firms, including timekeeping and document management systems.
- Knowledge of non-profit corporate law in the state of California.
- Experience contributing to training and organizational learning.
- Experience overseeing key elements of organizational risk assessment and management.
- Working knowledge of federal tax law as it applies to §501(c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations.
- Non-profit experience.
- International legal experience.
