The Summer Law Clerk position at API Legal Outreach is a great opportunity for law students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in providing legal services to marginalized communities. This internship offers a stipend of $150/week for 10 weeks, with a commitment of 40 hours per week, 5 days a week. The position is open until filled and will take place in the organization's offices in Oakland and San Francisco, with a hybrid option available. API Legal Outreach is a community-based organization founded in 1975, focused on providing culturally competent and linguistically appropriate legal services to the Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and immigrant communities in the Greater Bay Area and Central Valley. The organization's mission is to serve the most marginalized segments of the community, including low-income women, seniors, immigrants, and youth. The work at API Legal Outreach covers a range of social justice issues, such as gender-based violence, immigration and immigrant rights, disability rights, senior law and elder abuse, anti-human trafficking, youth violence prevention, anti-API hate violence, and more. The Summer Law Clerk position at API Legal Outreach is a great opportunity for law students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in providing legal services to marginalized communities. The position is open to those interested in working with at least one of the following practice areas: Housing, Immigration, Anti-Human Trafficking, Elder Law, Domestic Violence/Family Law, and Anti-API Hate. The selected candidates will work closely with legal staff and under the supervision of a licensed attorney to assist with providing direct legal representation to low-income community members. They will also have the opportunity to conduct legal research, draft legal documents, and participate in court hearings and client meetings. Key Responsibilities: - Provide direct legal representation to low-income community members under the supervision of legal staff. - Conduct legal research and draft memoranda to support and assist attorneys in case preparation. - Draft and review legal documents under the supervision of licensed attorneys. - Assist in the initial intake process, gathering preliminary information from potential clients through telephone and in-person interviews. - Support community education initiatives by helping prepare materials and presentations and attending outreach events. - Attend meetings and collaborate with community partners, ensuring that the organization's legal perspective is represented. - Attend court hearings, client meetings, and other relevant events for client work. The minimum qualifications for this position include being currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited law school. The ideal candidate should also have demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal research and produce clear, concise legal memoranda or other legal documents. They should also have a passion or experience advocating for underserved communities and the ability to collaborate effectively within a multicultural team. Preferred qualifications for this position include bilingual and bicultural skills relevant to low-income communities, especially API languages or Spanish, and working knowledge of Legal Server or other case management software.
