Senior Staff Attorney - Immigration Defense Job Category: Legal Requisition Number: SENIO001554 Summary: Seeking a highly motivated Senior Staff Attorney to join our team at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). This full-time, exempt position is located in Newark, NJ and will be responsible for providing direct legal representation to immigrants in removal proceedings, as well as supporting and mentoring staff attorneys and legal assistants. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years' experience in immigration law and procedures, with expertise in removal defense and other relevant specialized areas. Fluency in English and Spanish or French is highly desirable. Responsibilities: - Provide legal representation to indigent, unrepresented immigrants before immigration courts and federal courts. - Support and mentor staff attorneys and legal assistants on substantive legal issues. - Serve as a resource for AFSC staff on specialized areas of law, including providing trainings and case consultations. - Document project experiences and assist in preparing reports. - Manage caseload and maintain client files. - Collaborate with social worker to meet clients' social service needs. - Engage in policy and advocacy work concerning issues raised by clients. - Conduct presentations on immigration issues. - Respond to media inquiries and provide information to publicize the impact of policies on immigrants and their families. - Monitor conditions and access at detention centers and jails for use in reports and advocacy activities. - Participate in staff meetings and case reviews. Qualifications: - . - Minimum of three years' experience in immigration law and procedures preferred. - Expertise in removal defense and other relevant specialized areas. - Excellent legal skills and understanding of movement lawyering principles. - Bilingual in English and Spanish or French highly desirable. - Strong written and oral communication skills. - Self-motivated and well-organized. - Ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals. - Familiarity with software applications. - Ability to work some evenings and weekends, as well as travel out of state.
