H2: Providing Holistic Civil Legal Services for Low-Income Families

The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) is seeking a Staff Attorney to join our team and provide legal services to low-income families and children facing legal problems related to basic human needs. This full-time position, based in the Selmer or Jackson office, will be responsible for meeting the requirements of the Family Centered Legal Solutions Project and providing holistic civil legal services to families in the WTLS service area.

As a Staff Attorney, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of low-income families by providing legal advice and representation in various areas of law, including family law, juvenile law, consumer law, and more. This position will also involve administrative advocacy and litigation in state and federal courts.

Key Responsibilities:

- Interview clients and provide legal advice and representation in civil legal matters affecting low-income families
- Comply with funder requirements, the Legal Services Corporation requirements, and the American Bar Association's Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Aid
- Conduct legal research and analysis to develop creative solutions for complex problems
- Draft letters, memoranda, pleadings, and other legal documents
- Distribute community education materials and speak at community events
- Maintain accurate case notes and contemporaneous time records

Requirements:

- Juris Doctorate degree and current licensure in good standing in Tennessee or eligible for reciprocity
- General practice experience, including litigation experience, or willingness to participate in appropriate trainings
- Ability to conduct research and analysis and draft legally sufficient pleadings and documents
- Strong communication skills and experience working with diverse populations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe Professional

Working Conditions:

- Full-time position with work hours between 8:30 . and 5 ., Monday through Friday
- Work may occasionally be required after hours or on weekends
- Office setting with occasional travel within the WTLS service area

Compensation & Benefits:

- Salary: DOE, paid bi-monthly on the 5th and 20th of each month
- Full-time benefits include health insurance, dental plan, LTD, life insurance, paid annual leave, sick leave, and all paid holidays
