Summary:

The University of Michigan is seeking an experienced Regional Medical Malpractice Attorney to join their Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OGC). This attorney will focus on managing medical malpractice claims and litigation for the University's integrated academic medical center, Michigan Medicine, and its clinical enterprise, U-M Health. The role will be tailored to the selected candidate's unique qualifications and experiences, with a focus on managing pre-suit claims and litigation in collaboration with other OGC team members. The attorney will report to the Managing Regional Associate General Counsel and may have their primary office location in either Lansing or Grand Rapids, with regular travel between the two offices and to Ann Arbor. The OGC follows a hybrid model with onsite presence three days a week. This is a full-time position with Sparrow Health System, an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.

Responsibilities:

• Provide counsel and support to the University's integrated academic medical center and clinical enterprise in managing medical malpractice claims and litigation.
• Focus on managing pre-suit claims and litigation consistent with the Michigan Model and in collaboration with other OGC team members.
• Tailor role to selected candidate's unique qualifications and experiences.
• Report to the Managing Regional Associate General Counsel.
• May have primary office location in Lansing or Grand Rapids, with regular travel between the two offices and to Ann Arbor.

Requirements:

• Member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan or eligibility for admission.
• Minimum 10 years of significant experience managing medical malpractice claims and/or litigation in Michigan.
• Preferred: experience with academic medical centers and/or public entities and first chair trial experience.
• Juris Doctor Degree from an . accredited law school.
• Must have good working knowledge of HIPAA, the Michigan Public Health Code, electronic medical records, and professional liability law.
• Must be able to work effectively with senior level health care executives, physicians, and other health care professionals.
• Desired traits for a candidate include the ability to work independently with minimum supervision, excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational skills, maintaining a positive attitude, working productively with many individuals on a project, excellent problem solving skills, ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects, and proficiency in legal research and document management technology.
