BDO is seeking a Managing Director, Unclaimed Property to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) practice in Dallas, TX. This position will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to the SALT practice, as well as managing and developing a team of tax professionals. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SALT, with experience in tax compliance, consulting, controversy, and specialization in unclaimed property.

The Managing Director, Unclaimed Property will have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients in various industries and will be responsible for providing written tax advice, conducting research, and developing strategies to minimize tax burden and compliance costs. This role will also involve marketing and business development efforts, as well as maintaining key client relationships.

Responsibilities:

Provide written tax advice to clients, including evaluating and recommending alternative courses of action to minimize tax burden and compliance costs
Conduct research and analyze facts and sources to prepare studies of tax implications and outline alternative courses of action for clients
Collaborate with other tax professionals to resolve complex and contentious tax matters
Ensure clients comply with applicable tax authorities while identifying options for minimizing tax and reporting burdens
Manage engagements and collaborate with business development teams to drive sales tax compliance service offerings
Handle inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding tax issues and questions
Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues and respond to examiner questions and challenges
Act as an industry expert in SALT, identifying cross-selling opportunities and managing SALT services for assigned clients
Develop tools and improvements to enhance the efficiency of the SALT practice
Prepare tax accrual workpapers and understand and apply industry standards
Develop new ideas to reduce taxes and expenses and offer non-tax benefits to clients
Participate in relevant industry groups and lead marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives
Supervise and train a team of tax professionals, providing periodic performance feedback and evaluations
Act as a career advisor and mentor to team members

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required, Master's degree and/or Juris Doctorate preferred
CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred
10+ years of prior SALT experience, including experience supervising tax professionals and preparing/reviewing tax provisions
Strong understanding of corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships
Knowledge of ASC740-10 and FAS 109 and FIN48
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with standard tax applications and research tools
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical and research skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Executive presence and ability to act as primary ,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $150,000 - $400,000

delivers periodic performance feedback, and completes performance evaluations for sts salt senior managers, managers and staff
acts as career advisor to sts salt senior managers, managers and staff, as appropriate

qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities:

education:

bachelor’s degree in accounting or other relevant field required
master’s degree in accounting, taxation or other relevant field preferred
juris doctorate preferred

experience:

ten (10) or more years of prior salt experience required
prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required
prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions high preferred
