H1: Staff Attorney Position at Lakeshore Legal Aid H2: Dedicated Lawyer Needed to Advocate for Low-Income and Senior Clients Lakeshore Legal Aid, a non-profit organization serving low-income individuals, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, is seeking a Staff Attorney for their Pontiac, MI office. This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $50,000 and excellent benefits. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing free direct legal representation to clients in southeast Michigan and the thumb region, as well as offering advice and brief legal services through the organization's attorney-staffed hotline. The practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law. Key Responsibilities: - Provide timely civil legal services to low-income and senior clients through representation in trial courts, appellate courts, and other forums - Serve clients in a holistic and client-centered manner - Develop expertise in one or more areas of law, if required - Maintain professional relationships with coworkers, clients, and members of the judicial system - Train or mentor other staff in areas of experience - Conduct presentations on legal services to community groups - Continuously develop expertise to handle complex litigation or other projects - Other duties as assigned by the supervising attorney or organization's leadership Qualifications: - Graduated from an accredited law school - Admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan, or willing to apply for admission by reciprocity or taking the bar exam - Demonstrated interest in poverty law and working with low-income individuals - Excellent communication skills and ability to empathize with diverse clients - Ability to handle difficult circumstances with all people - Demonstrable skills in litigation, advocacy, interviewing, and drafting legal documents - Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks - Excellent written and oral communication skills To apply, interested candidates can submit their cover letter and resume on the organization's website.
