Job Description:

· Reporting to the Legal Director, the Paralegal will work under the supervision of attorneys to provide legal services to CJI clients in protective order and complex family law matters.
· The Paralegal will assist with document gathering and review, case document management, legal research, and will work as part of a litigation team.
· The ideal candidate is organized, professional, responsible, and committed to helping meet clients’ needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provide client-centered legal support to CJI attorneys and clients in complex family law cases.
· Assist attorneys and staff in all aspects of case litigation.
· Identify legal and procedural issues in individual cases and bring them to the attention of attorneys.
· Prepare opening, closing, and case status memoranda.
· Update case files and client management systems.
· Request, gather, and review documents from clients and witnesses.
· Summarize documents and maintain indices and binders for litigation.
· Maintain email and phone contact with clients during litigation.
· Document all contacts with clients and third-parties.
· Draft correspondence, document requests and responses, subpoenas, and notices for trial or deposition.
· Compile and maintain files of all responses and documents related to discovery or litigation requests.
· Work with clients to draft answers to discovery and respond to requests for information.
· Redact documents and ensure protected information is filed appropriately.
· File court documents.
· Draft legal documents such as discovery, memoranda of law, motions, orders, and correspondence.
· Maintain and organize case files.
· Provide resources and referrals to address clients’ needs.
· Attend meetings and training.
· Maintain case statistics and develop reports.
· Assist with project and membership development.
· Participate in committees and policy-making bodies.
· Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in paralegal work.
· One year paralegal certificate from an ABA approved program preferred.
· Experience in family law or legal services preferred.
· Commitment to providing excellent legal services to victims of interpersonal violence and abuse.
· Understanding of issues facing protective parents and victims of interpersonal violence in Maryland courts.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Fluency in English required, fluency in a foreign language preferred.
· Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize workload.
· Strong interpersonal skills and judgment.
· Empathetic, creative, and people-oriented.
· Flexible and able to work in a team.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
· Reliable transportation and ability to attend in-person court hearings throughout Maryland.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, and familiarity with client/case management systems.
· Commitment to the mission of CJI.

Conditions of Employment:

· Satisfactory completion of a background check.
· Minimum of 40 hours per week.
· Successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
· Compliance with CJI policies and supervisor's requests.
· Reliable transportation and necessary licenses/insurance for travel throughout Maryland.
· Accurate timesheets and meeting job performance expectations.
