Supervising Attorney - New York City - Full-Time - Exempt - Legal - Organization: Office of the Appellate Defender

Salary: $115,000 - $127,000

Overview:
- Member of management team
- Reports to Deputy Attorney-in-Charge
- Provide guidance in appellate representation and post-conviction relief to staff attorneys
- Use appropriate leadership models, including the "double-team" model
- Work from case inception to completion
- Engage in formal training and mentorship
- Proven track record of supporting team members in advocating for marginalized clients
- Energized by leveraging knowledge and experience for organization's success and sustainability

Who You Are:
- Experienced in criminal law and post-conviction representation
- Member in good standing of a bar in any jurisdiction
- Possess or can obtain NY licensure within a reasonable time
- Excellent research, writing, and oral argument skills
- Demonstrated commitment to public defense
- Ability to train others in these areas
- Supervisory or project management experience
- Culturally aware and sensitive
- Clear communicator
- Collaborative
- Passionate about challenging inequities in the criminal justice system
- Leader with people-centric and culture-forward approach
- Agile with strong organizational and case management skills

What You Will Do:
- Screen cases for potential issues to raise on appeal or in other post-conviction litigation
- Supervise attorneys, including pro-bono volunteer attorneys and law students
- Conferencing issues and developing strategy
- Reviewing and revising briefs
- Preparing and mooting attorneys for oral argument
- Developing attorney-client relationships through trauma-informed lens
- Create and enhance a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work culture
- Train and mentor attorneys and law students
- Provide CLE and training programs for outside defender organizations
- Collaborate with leadership to devise and implement organizational goals
- Carry a small caseload consisting of direct appeals, post-conviction motions and hearings, and other post-conviction relief
