The Legal Rights Center (LRC) offers competitive internships for students interested in criminal defense work. Our interns work closely with our attorneys and community advocates to provide community-oriented defense for our clients.

- Gain hands-on experience in criminal defense work
- Work with a multidisciplinary team that incorporates non-attorney advocates
- Address systemic inequity in communities of color and impoverished communities
- Develop case theories and participate in trials
- Negotiate case resolutions with prosecuting attorneys and judges
- Identify and remedy legal and non-legal client needs

Requirements:
- Commitment to working as part of a defense team
- Experience working with indigent and minority populations
- Creative problem-solving skills
- Interest in social justice and civil rights issues
- Willingness to learn from clients and their experiences
- Experience conducting client intake interviews

Volunteer attorneys at the Legal Rights Center have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in criminal defense and juvenile delinquency cases. Our volunteers work closely with our experienced staff attorneys and have the chance to work on a variety of cases and advocacy issues.

- Gain experience in criminal defense and juvenile delinquency cases
- Work on all aspects of our caseload
- Mentored by experienced staff attorneys
- Opportunity to work on Education and Community presentations
- Gain experience in CHIPs court
- Work on advocacy issues

Successful volunteers:
- Complement our defense work
- May primarily practice in immigration law or other areas
- Have the opportunity to handle a small number of criminal matters
