Organization: Legal Services Alabama (LSA) Position: John Lewis Legal Fellowship Salary: $54,810 Job Type: Temporary full-time (one year) Location: Any of LSA's statewide offices in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa Introduction: - Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. - LSA provides free, client-centered, civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians. - The John Lewis Fellowship was established in 2019 to encourage young attorneys interested in working at the intersection of poverty law and racial justice. - This position has the possibility of working from any of LSA's statewide offices in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa. Job Description: - The John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama's strong network of pro bono attorneys. - Fellows will advocate for clients, coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics, and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. - Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering. - Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and meaningful experiences with people living in poverty, people of color, or communities who have traditionally faced structural barriers to justice. - Strong legal writing and communication skills are required, and initiative and creativity are preferred. - Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual. Qualifications: - The position is open to candidates who will be sitting for a Bar Exam in July 2024 or February 2025 or who are already licensed in any state. - Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed in Alabama. - Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and meaningful experiences with marginalized communities. - Strong legal writing and communication skills are required, and initiative and creativity are preferred. - Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual. - Alabama recognizes reciprocity in certain states.
