# Overview of TRLA Unpaid Semester Internship

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) offers unpaid semester internships for undergraduate students, recent graduates, and law students in offices across our service area. The internships provide an opportunity to gain experience in public interest law and explore potential career paths.

Interns can gain hands-on experience in a variety of practice areas, including immigration, family law, consumer law, and housing law. TRLA also offers limited summer fellowship funding for students placed in a rural office.

## Benefits of TRLA Unpaid Semester Internship

Interns and clerks at TRLA gain experience in public interest law while working with some of the most vulnerable populations in the country. Interns can expect to:

- Develop legal research and writing skills
- Learn about the legal system and the practical application of the law
- Develop an understanding of how to advocate for the rights of clients
- Receive mentoring from experienced attorneys and other legal professionals
- Become familiar with the court system and other legal processes
- Gain experience in client and case management

## Eligibility Requirements

TRLA accepts applications for unpaid clerkships and internships year-round. Eligibility requirements include:

- Undergraduate student or recent graduate seeking internship
- Law student seeking clerkship or summer fellowship
- Spanish fluency and/or an interest in rural or border placement
- Law school or undergraduate school graduation date
- Interagency Language Roundtable Language Skill Level Descriptions
- Preferred offices
- Cover letter addressing one or more of the following:
- Describe a significant legal or social justice experience and its impact on your plan to pursue public interest law.
- Describe some of the unique challenges you think or know clients in our service area may experience in rural or border areas and how an agency like TRLA can help.
- Describe any connection, personal or professional, to our service area and the client populations we serve.
- Resume

## Salary Information

TRLA internships and clerkships are unpaid. We have limited summer fellowship funding for students placed in a rural office.
