Job Title: Managing Attorney/Managing Director, International Program Location: San Francisco, California; New York, New York; Washington, District of Columbia; or remote Salary Range: $214,700 - $251,000 per year Employment Type: Full-time About Organization: Earthjustice is a leading nonprofit environmental law organization with over 550 staff, including more than 200 lawyers. Our mission is to use the power of law and partnership to protect public health, address environmental injustice, defend and restore natural ecosystems, and transition to clean energy. We work with thousands of partners and communities to tackle the environmental crises of our time. Position Summary: Earthjustice is seeking a Managing Attorney or Managing Director to lead its International Program, which uses legal advocacy to protect the global environment. The successful candidate will provide collaborative leadership for the program's advocacy, strategy development, and partnership building, and oversee day-to-day operations. They will also serve as a primary spokesperson for Earthjustice's international work and work closely with other departments to advance programmatic and institutional goals. Responsibilities: Program (Essential Functions) - Lead all aspects of the International Program's advocacy, including setting strategic direction and implementing advocacy efforts. - Provide support, guidance, and mentorship to team members. - Build and maintain relationships with clients, partners, and government authorities. - Collaborate with other departments to advance programmatic and institutional goals. - Cultivate and maintain relationships with key funders. - Work with the General Counsel to ensure compliance with laws in multiple jurisdictions. - Act as a primary spokesperson for Earthjustice's international work. - Collaborate with Earthjustice leadership on vision, strategy, and goals. - Ensure excellence and consistency in the program's advocacy. Management (Essential Functions) - Manage and lead a diverse team, with an emphasis on emotional intelligence and cultural competency. - Directly supervise staff and oversee administrative functions. - Mentor and develop staff members. - Effect and manage organizational and program change. - Communicate institutional vision, policies, and initiatives to staff. - Promote a respectful and inclusive workplace. - Oversee program work and partnerships with an eye towards personal and organizational security. - Recruit and hire qualified candidates. - Provide staff with ongoing performance feedback and career development opportunities. - Promote an inclusive work environment. - Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: - Juris Doctor (.) or equivalent . law degree, with at least 10 years of litigation or advocacy experience in a . country or in international law; or equivalent training in another highly relevant professional field with at least 10 years of advocacy experience in an international context. - Ability to effectively manage and lead a diverse and international team. - Understanding of advocacy and litigation in both common law and civil law frameworks. - Knowledge of global environmental threats and priorities. - Excellent management skills. - Ability to travel. - Commitment to developing team skills and talents. - Ability to give and receive regular feedback in a timely and respectful manner. - Experience coaching and mentoring staff. - Strong strategic thinking skills. - Ability to manage a program of advocacy strategies and work collaboratively with colleagues and partners. - Proficiency in working with technical experts. - Experience working in international and/or cross-cultural settings. - Strong communication skills. - Commitment to public interest work. - Awareness of and sensitivity to diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations. - Ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive work culture. - Commitment to fundraising and developing relationships with donors. - Proven ability to manage operations and budgets. - Familiarity with climate change, fossil fuel extraction, and energy policy and law is desirable. - Preferred professional fluency in at least one language in addition to English. Compensation and Benefits: - Competitive salary in the range of $214,700 - $251,000 per year, depending on location. - Excellent benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
