Job Description:

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for its Criminal Appeals Division in Austin, Texas. This is a full-time position with a standard work week of 40 hours. The AAG will be responsible for performing entry-level to moderately complex legal work, including researching and writing appellate briefs, motions, and other legal documents related to habeas cases. They will also represent the OAG in state and federal courts, provide legal advice to client agencies, and work closely with other attorneys in the division.

Key Responsibilities:

- Researching and writing legal documents related to habeas cases
- Analyzing complex legal and factual issues
- Representing the OAG in state and federal courts
- Providing legal advice to client agencies and law enforcement entities
- Collaborating with other attorneys in the division
- Complying with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

Qualifications:

- Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate
- Licensed to practice by the Texas State Bar
- Knowledge of Federal habeas practices and procedures
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
- Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location and perform in-person work with coworkers
- Ability to lift and relocate up to 30 lbs.
- Willingness to work on non-capital and capital cases

Preferred Qualifications:

- First or second chair experience handling complex federal habeas evidentiary hearings or state or federal trial experience
- Experience and/or demonstrated willingness to mentor/train less experienced attorneys
- Member in good standing with the United States Supreme Court
