Position: Staff Attorney - Housing Experience: Admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan Salary: $60,000 starting salary, commensurate with qualifications Organization: Lakeshore Legal Aid Lakeshore Legal Aid, an organization dedicated to serving low-income individuals, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, is seeking a Staff Attorney to join their team in Detroit, Michigan. This position will focus on advocating and litigating on behalf of clients facing legal issues related to housing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated lawyer with a demonstrated interest in poverty law and working with low-income individuals. The organization offers a holistic approach to addressing clients' legal issues and improving communities. They provide free legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb region, as well as client intake, advice, and brief services throughout the state. With a focus on housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law, Lakeshore Legal Aid is committed to serving those in need. Job Responsibilities: - Provide timely civil legal services to low-income and senior clients through representation in trial courts, appellate courts, and other forums - Serve clients in a holistic and client-centered manner - Develop expertise in one or more areas of law, if required - Maintain professional relationships with coworkers, clients, and members of the judicial system - Train or mentor other staff in areas of experience - Create and deliver presentations on legal services to community groups - Continuously develop expertise to handle complex litigation or other projects Qualifications: - Admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan - Demonstrated interest in poverty law and working with low-income individuals - Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal - Ability to handle difficult circumstances and diverse clients - Strong skills in litigation, advocacy, interviewing, and drafting legal documents - Ability to plan and organize multiple tasks effectively Salary: The starting salary for this position is $60,000 and is commensurate with qualifications.
