Government Relations Counsel - Advocate for GEICO's Legislative and Regulatory Agenda in MD

Are you a skilled attorney with a passion for government affairs and a strong network of state policymakers? GEICO is seeking a Government Relations Counsel to join our team in Chevy Chase, MD and advocate for our policy priorities in the insurance industry. In this role, you will leverage your expertise and relationships to shape GEICO's positions on legislative and regulatory proposals, build and maintain a network of key policymakers, and position the company as a leader in the industry.

Key Responsibilities:

- Leverage experience and relationships with state policymakers to effectively advocate GEICO’s legislative and regulatory agenda.
- Build and maintain a network of key policymakers, including state legislators, heads of relevant executive agencies and their staff, industry members, trade associations, and other respected voices to amplify GEICO’s advocacy efforts.
- Support the development of GEICO’s policy priority positions, and strategies to achieve those objectives
- Ability to quickly and accurately understand state legislative and regulatory proposals and their impacts, including working with internal business partners to shape GEICO’s positions and assist with compliance strategies.
- Assist in identifying and managing NAIC proposals/models/recommendations and state-specific legislative and regulatory developments that could impact GEICO.
- Position and leverage the company’s influence on key issues in individual states, and within NAIC, NCOIL and other relevant organizations.
- Assist in preparing comment letters as well as internal memos on key developments.
- Oversee and coordinate efforts of outside firms and lobbyists, as well as driving GEICO’s agenda with trade associations and coalitions related to various initiatives.
- Draft and execute strategic political contribution plans in consultation with leadership; oversee applicable grassroots political engagement.

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, licensed to practice law in at least one state.
- Minimum 5-7 years relevant government affairs experience in insurance industry required.
- Significant property/casualty insurance experience with knowledge of auto insurance laws and regulations strongly preferred.
- Experience dealing with insurance departments and state legislatures.
- Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills tailored to different audiences.
- Ability to articulate the organization’s positions in an impactful and persuasive manner to senior decision makers and industry leaders and to offer advice on complex issues to business professionals at every level of the organization.
- Skill to collaborate with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders to deal with complex issues.
- Client-service oriented and enthusiasm for working in a team-oriented, dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision of day-to-day tasks while also appropriately identifying matters requiring escalation to management.
