Overview:

Pine Tree Legal Assistance is seeking a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Attorney to provide high-quality, low-barrier legal services to survivors of sexual assault, with a primary focus on child sexual abuse victims and their non-offending parents and caregivers. This position is based in Presque Isle, Maine and may involve some remote work. The attorney may also be expected to provide coverage for Family Law and Victim Rights (FLVR) cases in other areas of Maine on an 'as needed' basis.

Responsibilities:

- Provide direct legal services to survivors of sexual assault, including child sexual abuse victims and their non-offending parents and caregivers
- Collaborate with advocates at various organizations
- Travel to attend trainings and provide coverage for cases in other areas of Maine
- Work closely with other staff to refer and intake cases
- Collaborate with other service providers, law enforcement, and other agencies involved in the community response team
- Participate in working groups and coalitions focused on improving systems for sexual assault survivors
- Refer clients to other Pine Tree projects as needed
- Engage in community outreach and networking to increase access to legal services for eligible individuals

General Work Expectations:

- Adhere to Pine Tree's Standards of Practices and other ethical and professional responsibilities
- Follow Legal Services Corporation regulations and other relevant funder requirements
- Maintain accurate timekeeping records
- Complete administrative responsibilities in a timely manner
- Maintain client files for coverage purposes
- Review and close cases promptly
- Participate in regular case meetings and other office discussions
- Attend training opportunities to improve skills
- Contribute to office needs such as mail and facilities management
- Uphold Pine Tree's core values

Specific Work Expectations:

- Provide legal assistance in accordance with Pine Tree's Standards of Practices
- Represent a minimum of 100 cases per year on behalf of service area residents
- Provide advice and limited representation in a minimum of 25 cases per year for non-offending parents of child victims of sexual assault and adult survivors of sexual violence
- Supervise rejection or brief advice in cases outside the priorities for this project
- Provide outreach and presentations to organizations and collaborations that work with sexual assault victims and survivors
- Participate in presentations, trainings, and consultations for eligible individuals, partner agencies, and other stakeholders
- Be aware of activities or practices that may be inconsistent with equal justice for low-income individuals and bring concerns to the appropriate staff
- Utilize opportunities to engage with the private bar and public sector attorneys
- Work with other Pine Tree staff to produce grant reports and identify funding opportunities to strengthen staffing and legal services

Basic Job Requirements:

- Reside in or be willing to relocate to Maine
- Admitted to practice law in Maine or eligible to practice under MRCP 89(c)
- Previous litigation experience and work with low-income individuals and survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault is helpful

Compensation and Benefits:

- Salary range of $67,140 - $104,140, depending on experience
