Brooklyn Legal Services is seeking three (3) Staff Attorneys for its Tenant Rights Coalition, based in our Brownsville, Brooklyn office. We are a part of Legal Services NYC, a civil legal services organization with a mission to fight poverty and seek racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. Our office provides a wide range of civil legal services and includes a diverse and inclusive staff, with a wall-to-wall union for all employees.

The Tenant Rights Coalition (TRC) is a team of legal workers partnered with tenant leaders and community organizers to combat the impacts of gentrification in Brooklyn. Based in Brownsville, our work includes supporting tenant association meetings, defending against and asserting claims in various courts and agencies, conducting workshops and trainings, and supporting local and statewide coalition work.

The Staff Attorney will work closely with the TRC team and community partners to support Brooklyn tenants through bold and creative litigation and advocacy in multiple forums, adapting to the ever-changing legal landscape.

Responsibilities:

- Manage a diverse and high-volume caseload, including individual and group cases
- Staff or lead workshops, trainings, and clinics on and off-site
- Attend and/or lead team meetings and substantive trainings
- Attend and/or support tenant meetings at buildings throughout Brooklyn, including evenings and weekends
- Prepare and appear at multiple court appearances in various forums, managing all aspects of litigation
- Support local and statewide coalition spaces to advance organizing goals of community partners and tenant leaders
- Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, including legal and non-legal workers, to execute complex and creative litigation
- Maintain online case files within the office's case management system to comply with grants

Experience & Qualifications:

- . from an accredited law school
- Admitted to the New York State Bar, eligible for reciprocal admission, or a law graduate who has passed or registered for the New York bar exam
- Excellent advocacy, litigation, analytic, writing, and leadership skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and work well in a team dynamic
- Willingness to conduct community outreach, trainings, and clinics in various settings and to varied audiences, including evenings and weekends
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing strategies
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and working alongside low-income and communities of color
- Second language proficiency preferred
