Housing Attorney

Position Description

The Housing Attorney position at LawNY®'s Ithaca office is responsible for providing direct legal representation to clients in landlord-tenant matters, as well as related government benefits and subsidized housing matters. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of how civil legal issues intersect with social and economic justice, and will be committed to learning and developing their skills in support of LawNY®'s vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

- Maintain a full-time caseload representing eligible clients served by the Housing Unit
- Develop and maintain specialized knowledge in housing matters, including landlord-tenant, subsidized housing, and government benefits
- Provide legal services, including advice, negotiation, litigation, and administrative advocacy, to low-income clients and client groups
- Interact respectfully with clients from diverse backgrounds, with a commitment to cultural competence and humility
- Collaborate with other LawNY® advocates, human services providers, non-profit organizations, and community groups to address legal issues within the community
- Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment for fellow employees
- Comply with grant reporting requirements, program reporting, timekeeping, file maintenance, case closing, and compliance review
- Maintain a high level of professional competence through attendance at training sessions, seminars, and conferences, and individual efforts to stay informed about current developments in poverty law and equitable client service

Qualifications

- Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State, eligible for admission without examination, or willing to take the next available Bar examination
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income communities

Additional Traits and Skills

- Litigation and advocacy experience in state and/or federal court and/or administrative forums, particularly in landlord-tenant, foreclosure, bankruptcy, homelessness prevention, fair housing, and/or government benefits
- Experience incorporating an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into legal practice
- Understanding of structural and institutional racism and its impact on underserved and underrepresented communities
- Strong interpersonal skills, including a commitment to providing trauma-informed services
- Lived experience with client communities
- Fluency in a language other than English that is spoken by LawNY®'s clients

Compensation

- Salary dependent on experience and based on a pay scale with annual increments
- Beginning salary for a Staff Attorney is $58,000, with a salary of $71,200 for a Staff Attorney with ten years of experience
- LawNY® is a qualifying employer for the public interest loan forgiveness program
