H2: Job Description and Requirements

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Attorney General IV-V in the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU). This position will be cross-designated as a Special United States Attorney and serve as a Trial Attorney/Prosecutor for the National Rapid Response Strike Force in the Health Care Fraud Unit of the . Department of Justice. The MFCU works jointly with federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and HHS-OIG, to investigate and prosecute fraud cases involving major health care providers operating in multiple jurisdictions.

The selected candidate will be required to pass an extensive background investigation, including a criminal history, employment, education, financial status, reputation, and social media check. They will also need to obtain a Top Secret federal security clearance in order to fully participate in DOJ Prosecutions. This position will be located in Houston, Texas, with a prosecution region encompassing the entire state.

Job Responsibilities:

Independently direct, conduct, and monitor investigations
Prepare for and conduct trials
Advise on pleadings and other court filings
Make charging decisions and propose dispositions for assigned cases
Develop and maintain the Section’s program for effective national investigation and prosecution of health care fraud violations
Coordinate with federal and state agencies to identify and prosecute significant multi-jurisdictional and corporate health care fraud cases

Qualifications:

Education: . from an accredited law school
License: Licensed attorney in the State of Texas
Experience: Three to four years of full-time litigation experience
Knowledge: Laws and legal principles relevant to the MFCU, including . Code, Federal Code of Criminal Procedure, and Code of Federal Regulations
Skills: Handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, effective oral and written communication, sound judgment and decision making, legal research and writing, conducting investigations, proffers and plea negotiations, reasoning and logic, identifying and solving complex problems, applying applicable laws, prioritizing workloads, using judgment to identify courses of action, and using a computer and applicable software
Abilities: Prepare legal documents, conduct research, interpret and apply laws, summarize findings, prepare cases and present at trial, conduct hearings, communicate effectively, provide excellent customer service, work cooperatively with others, work in person at assigned OAG work location or . Attorney’s Office, arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel, work more than 40 hours as needed, lift and relocate 30 lbs., and travel up to 50% (including overnight travel)

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as a criminal prosecutor
Experience with civil or criminal health care fraud matters
Knowledge of white collar crime litigation
Experience in supporting, litigating, and supervising federal or state criminal cases
Experience in . District Court
Experience with the federal judiciary
