The Opportunity:

- The opportunity is for a dedicated Trial Attorney (BI/UM) at the Washington, MD staff counsel law office location.
- The position involves providing legal representation to USAA members, insured clients, and USAA entities for Property and Casualty covered losses.
- The job offers a flexible work environment with most of the work being done from a home office.
- Travel is required for attending trials, hearings, depositions, or other case-related proceedings within the states of Maryland, DC, and/or Virginia.
- Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Responsibilities:

- Independently manage a caseload of simple to moderate Property and Casualty insurance defense cases.
- May handle and/or assist with complex litigation cases.
- Appear in court for arbitrations, trials, and mediations as required.
- Provide legal advice to clients and P&C Claims team members.
- Develop and implement legal strategy and budget projections for assigned cases.
- Prepare legal documents such as pleadings, motions, statements, and trial briefs.
- Conduct settlement negotiations with plaintiffs' attorneys.
- Stay updated on relevant statutes, case law, and trial-related technology.
- Provide training to support staff, P&C Claims, and Claims Litigation.
- Ensure effective risk management in accordance with policies and procedures.

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school.
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- 6 years of experience practicing law handling personal injury or civil litigation or trial cases.
- Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction(s) to be served.
- Experience practicing law in the court systems within the geographic area being served.
- Ability to perform online legal research.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Desired Qualifications:

- 7+ years of experience practicing law in the state of Maryland, DC, and/or Virginia.
- Substantial first chair jury trial experience in personal injury insurance defense.
- Substantial experience defending first party BI/UM claims.
- Experience preparing reports and memos for Claims.

Salary and Benefits:

- USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure competitive compensation.
- The salary range for this position is $109,130 - $208,.
- Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance.
