Migrant Staff Attorney Job Description:

South Carolina Legal Services, a non-profit organization, is seeking a Migrant Staff Attorney to join our team in the Charleston office. This position will primarily focus on providing civil litigation and outreach services to low-income migrant and seasonal agricultural farmworkers. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in civil litigation, excellent relationship building and leadership skills, and be fully proficient in both written and spoken English and Spanish.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provide civil litigation services in the areas of employment law, occupational safety and health law, and civil rights to low-income migrant and seasonal agricultural farmworkers.
- Conduct outreach to farmworker communities and camps to build relationships and provide legal assistance.
- Collaborate with other organizations serving farmworkers to ensure comprehensive and effective services are provided.
- Prepare and present oral and written communications, including legal documents and presentations.
- Travel as needed, including some evening, weekend, and overnight work to reach target groups.

Qualifications:

- Member of the South Carolina Bar.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in civil litigation.
- Strong relationship building, leadership, and research skills.
- Demonstrated competence in working with diverse clients and client communities.
- Fully proficient in written and spoken English and Spanish.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record, as use of organization vehicles may be required.
- Knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office.
- Commitment to public interest and poverty law.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other advocates and client groups.
- Willingness to travel, including statewide.
