Mergers and Acquisitions Tax Managing Director - Chicago, IL

BDO USA LLP is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Mergers and Acquisitions Tax Managing Director to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) practice in Chicago, IL. This individual will be responsible for providing specialized tax advice to clients, evaluating alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and compliance costs, and identifying potential tax risks and changes in tax policy and regulations. The Mergers and Acquisitions Tax Managing Director will also play a critical role in marketing, networking, and business development within their area of expertise and maintaining key client relationships.

Responsibilities:

Research
Conduct thorough research on identified tax topics and analyze the findings
Prepare studies on tax implications and present alternative courses of action to clients
Collaborate with other Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex tax issues
Tax Compliance
Ensure clients comply with applicable tax authorities and identify ways to minimize tax and reporting burdens
Manage engagements to achieve desired metrics
Work with Business Development team and other strategic partners to drive sales tax compliance services
Tax Consulting
Respond to inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding tax issues
Draft responses to examiner questions and challenges
Monitor progress of tax consulting projects
Provide recommended solutions by combining tax knowledge with business and industry knowledge
Tax Controversy
Represent clients in front of tax authorities for contested issues
Respond to questions from federal and state agencies
Tax Specialization
Act as an industry expert in SALT
Identify cross-selling opportunities with other tax specializations
Manage SALT services for assigned clients
Develop tools and improvements to enhance the efficiency of the SALT practice
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109
Prepare tax accrual workpapers
ASC740-10
Understand and apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109 and FIN48
Identify and document financial benefits for clients
Strategy Development
Develop new ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or firm personnel by reducing taxes or expenses or offering non-tax benefits
Participate in industry groups
Lead marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field preferred
Juris Doctorate preferred
10+ years of prior SALT experience
Prior experience supervising tax professionals
Prior experience with tax provisions preferred
Knowledge of corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred
CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word
Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Superior analytical and research skills
Strong organizational skills and ability to meet project deadlines with attention to detail
Ability to multitask and work independently or in a team environment
Ability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work assignments
Ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and internal personnel
